בקהילה - משנים מציאות חברתית, Bakehila - Leading Social Change 3.43

MK Erel Margalit and his wife, Debbie, moved to Ein Karem, a Jerusalem neighborhood in 2002. Upon researching schools to send their daughters to, they were met with the harsh reality of the schools in the nearby neighborhood of Kiryat Yovel. They saw children without packed lunches, students who did not bother to show up for exams, and they learned of the extremely high drop-out rate (30%). The Margalits decided then and there to try and make a difference. They enlisted the help of Year of Service Volunteers - high school graduates who defer their military service for a year and spend time volunteering in organizations in need of assistance, and brought them to two Kiryat Yovel schools to run after-school academic tutoring and personal mentoring with small groups of children as well as provide them with a hot meal every day.

After very little time, this community project bore fruit and quickly spread to more and more schools, and to more neighborhoods in need, and the program base developed and became officially known as Bakehila- translated as "In the Community". Bakehila has since impacted over 25,000 children in impoverished neighborhoods in Jerusalem and is continuing to empower communities to be self-sustaining factions of society.

Erel Margalit officially founded Bakehila in June 2002, together with the establishment of The Lab, as part of their vision to rebrand Jerusalem as an internationally relevant cultural center and to empower disadvantaged Jerusalem neighborhoods. The Lab, an arts incubator for Jerusalem performing artists, responded to the need to bolster and transform Jerusalem via culture, creativity and innovation, while Bakehila invested in children's education and strengthething their community support sytem. The two non-profit organizations worked hand-in-hand as significant Jerusalem needs were met at the msot practical level. (The Lab eventually ceased their operations in 2011.)

12 years later, Bakehila continues to develop as the organization responds to the changing local needs and dymanic events in Israel. Bakehila is curently developing new programs aimed at fostering the next generation of emerging social leaders in Israel and expanding operations into more neighborhoods in the Arab-sector of Jerusalem.

העמותה נוסדה בירושלים על ידי אראל ודבי מרגלית בשנת 2002, על מנת לחזק את מוסדות החינוך בשכונת קריית היובל הסמוכה למקום מגוריהם.

לצורך הקמתה גויסו מתנדבי שנת השירות לפעול למען הקהילה. באמצעות השינשינים נפתח מרכז הלמידה הראשון בבית הספר בקריית יובל. מרכז הלמידה זימן לילדי השכונה עזרה לימודית בקבוצות קטנות, ואף סיפק ארוחות חמות למשתתפים.

הצלחת מרכז הלמידה הובילה בזמן קצר ביותר את פעילות העמותה לקשת רחבה של בתי ספר ושכונות ברחבי ירושלים וחתמה בחותמת איכות את השפעתה על ילדים, משפחות וקהילות.

בקהילה חרטה על דיגלה לשנות את המציאות החברתית בישראל. מאז ועד היום השפיעה על הישגיהם של למעלה מ-25,000 ילדים ובני נוער מהשכונות המוחלשות במגזר היהודי והערבי בירושלים.

בקהילה קולטת בכל שנה כ-50 בוגרי י"ב, מתנדבי שנת השירות. השינשינים מהווים סוכנים של שינוי חברתי המיישמים בפועל את חזון העמותה, וזאת באמצעות הקשר הבלתי אמצעי עם הילדים, בני הנוער והקהילות בהן הם פועלים.

13 שנים מיום הקמתה בקהילה ממשיכה לפתח, להוביל ולהעצים תכניות חינוכיות, חברתיות וקהילתיות, באופן המתאים למציאות המשתנה בירושלים בפרט ובישראל בכלל.

בקהילה יוצרת תכניות לטיפוח דור העתיד של מנהיגים חברתיים בישראל, במקביל לעבודה בשכונות במגזר היהודי והערבי כאחד. בבתי הספר, במרכזי הלמידה, במועדוני הנוער, בקומונות, בצבא ובמסלולי ההגשמה השונים: יחד – משנים מציאות חברתית.
