A progressive alternative to conventional postgraduate programmes in musicology, University College Cork's one-year MA in Music and Cultural History draws on the diverse expertise of a team of musicologists to combine the very best of traditional and innovative scholarly practice. You will have the opportunity to acquire and develop core musicological skills, including research methods, the appraisal of primary sources, the study of historical and contemporary notation systems, the close reading and analysis of musical texts, and the critical editing of music. You will also engage with some of the most exciting developments in recent music scholarship, including explorations of politics, class, gender, sexuality, race, ethnicity and (dis)ability in music; the interaction of music and other media; musical globalization; the fast-changing music industry; the manifold issues in today’s popular music and culture; and the new links being formed between musicology and other disciplines like film studies, cultural studies, postcolonial theory and philosophy.
