The GAA has a long and proud association with Wicklow Town and there was a GAA club in existence in the town as far back as 1886, a mere two years after the foundation of the national body in Thurles in November 1884.
This club, known simply as, Wicklow, won one of the first Wicklow Senior Football Championships in 1890. The 1890s and early 1900s were turbulent times for the GAA particularly in Wicklow where the effects of the Parnell Spilt were felt more keenly than elsewhere. However throughout this period, a succession of teams represented Wicklow Town. Teams such as Wicklow, Wicklow Independents and Wicklow Dark Blues ensured that the GAA flame was kept lighting in the county town. Indeed in 1903 Wicklow won the first ever Senior Hurling Championship in the county.
The early decades of the 20th Century did not see success visit Wicklow very often and the only senior successes came on the hurling field in 1916, 1928 and 1930. By the early 1940s the games were in need of re-organisation in the town and it was at this time that the St. Patrick's club was formed. It proved to be highly successful and Minor football victories in 1946, 1948, 1949 & 1950 set the scene for the greatest period in the club's history. And so it was, that between 1950 and 1961 the club won no fewer than eight Senior Football Championships. Many of the members of these teams became well known nationally through their exploits with the county and Railway Cup teams.
In 1969 St. Pat's enjoyed another Senior Football Success, which was to mark the beginning of a thirty-five year barren spell. Not until 2004, did the Miley Cup return to Wicklow Town, this time through a final victory over near neighbours Rathnew. In the intervening period St Pat's had tasted defeat at the final hurdle on five occasions. St Pat's were successful in 2006 and 2012 in returning the Miley Cup to the County Town with victories over Kiltegan and Baltinglass.
However, the period from 1969 onwards had seen the re-birth of hurling in the town and Intermediate successes in 1978 &1984 were followed by Senior Championships in 1990 & 1992. The 1980s, 1990s and early 2000s also saw the juvenile section of St Pat's enjoy unprecedented success and many County Championships were captured at underage level. The strength of the club today is a testament to this success and the hard work put in by countless coaches and volunteers down through the years.
The club remains active in the promotion of our games at all levels and in 2005 the creation of a Ladies Section added a new and vibrant element to the club. It is now ensured that all young people in Wicklow Town have a chance to play their national games.
The club is currently located at Dunbur Road just south of Wicklow Town, where its modern facilities include two pitches, dressing-rooms, a gym, a community hall, a kitchen and a spacious member's lounge.
New members are always welcome. For more information visit the clubhouse on Saturday mornings from 11am until 12:30pm
