In the 1960's Athy Boxing Club was one of the busiest clubs in Ireland. Then using the local Parochial Hall in St. John's Lane. Due to unforeseen circumstances the club closed in the early 70's. Then 20 years later a committee decided to review the club and St. Michael's Boxing Club was formed. The club has been apart of Athy community for many years. It started out in the hall of Mount St. Mary's, which was owned by the Sisters of Mercy community, which housed the club for 4 years. Frank Taaffe the donated the use of premises on Nelson Street.
At this time 4 brothers from Athy made their name in boxing circles.
Frank (15), Christy (14), Joe (13) and Dom (12) O'Rourke. Winning between them in one year:
3 Kildare Championships
2 Kildare Leagues
1 Leinster Title.
