Shandon is a district in Cork city noted for The Bells of Shandon, a song celebrating the bells of the Church of St Anne written by Francis Sylvester Mahony under the pen name of "Father Prout".Shandon was one of 28 settlements in and around ancient Cork, and a medieval church dedicated to St. Mary was built on the site. Although not part of the original Hiberno-Norse settlement of Cork, Shandon is one of the more historic districts of the city, avoiding the fires and floods experienced by the newer developments and older parts of the city.Shandon Street is the main street of Cork's north-side .
