What is amber ?

Amber is fossilized tree resin (not sap or copal ), which has been appreciated for its color and natural beauty since Neolithic times. Much valued from antiquity to the present as a healing gemstone . Amber is made into a variety of decorative objects and is used as an ingredient in perfumes, as a healing agent in folk medicine, and as jewellery.

There are five classes of amber, defined on the basis of their chemical constituents. Because it originates as a soft, sticky tree resin, amber sometimes contains animal and plant material as inclusions . ' Shelter ' for animals and plants ....

Amber age

Most of the existing amber today is between 30 and 90 millions years old which was produced by extinct coniferous trees of the Tertiary period .

Baltic Amber contains anywhere from 3 to 8% of succinic acid , a scientifically examined medical substance used in contemporary medicine .

Formation of amber

The formation process of amber begins with transformation of resin to copal . The transformation is triggered by high temperatures and pressure of overlying resinous sediments . The exposure to heat and pressure repels terpenes, which can cause deterioration and decay . Through the time and resistance the resin eventually hardens and becomes fossilized into amber .
