Martin's Mum Sarah, talks about the both the barriers and supports that affect Martin as martin Grows Martin's life has greatly changed from his earlier years. He has grown to be quite a big boy with the size and weight of any six year old. Paradoxically, Martin's condition hasn't changed. If anything, his health is more complex with bigger struggles as Martin grows. As parents we are so proud of our Son Martin, as every day of his life is a struggle for him but he can light up every day of our lives with his beautiful smile.
As parents we have made the choice to nurse Martin at home. This is an around the clock commitment, which is only possible with the help of night nurses. In this way we can keep Martin in the comfort if his own bed and out of hospital. Martin has spent over 50% of his life in Crumlin Hospital.
We emphasis how wonderful Crumlin and the staff there have been to us and have absolutely no criticism whatsoever of Our Lady's. However, our aim is to keep Martin at home as much as we can as the prognosis is that Martin's life expectancy is very short. We hold every moment as very precious and treasured.
As parents our aim is to make Martin's life full of happiness and to spend quality time together as a family, something that most families can take for granted.
Our amazing families and friends have helped us to achieve this by fundraising over the 6 years of Martin's life. Fundraising is essential for extra nursing and medical support and for specialised equipment for Martin.
We will be forever grateful to our families, extended family, friends, neighbours and work colleagues and also to those anonymous donations to Martin's fund over the last 6 years.
In 2012 an amazing fundraising event raised enough to provide a specially adapted car. That car has allowed us to be independent when it came to transportation.
Then again In 2014 our family and friends came together to fundraise to help us to adapt our home to cater for Martin's mobility at home, providing much needed specially adapted Bedroom and Bathroom extension with a hoist and tracking.
We will be forever grateful as it has hugely improved Martin's quality of life and a huge aspect of this build was to allow Martin to have easy access to his back garden & share treasured times with his brother Patrick.
Even so, we need to ask for your help and support once again. Martin has now grown too big for his child seat and buggy and now needs a new specialised wheelchair along with a van , adapted to carry it on the next portion of his journey. We would really appreciate it if you would support our friends who are running a special event for this purpose.
