Typically, one of 3 causes is responsible for your musculo-skeletal pain.

* Direct physical trauma
* Poor posture
* Stress

It is very likely that you can trace the source of your aches and pains back to one of these mechanisms, or even a combination of two or three of these.

Direct Physical Trauma
Direct physical trauma can be from a number of sources:

* Sport’s Injury
* Car Crash
* Fall
* Trying to lift a heavy object
* Repetitive Strain
* Overloading your body with a physical activity (e.g. painting, gardening etc.)

Some more common examples of physical trauma you may have experienced are:

* Spraining your ankle
* Suddenly overloading muscles that you have used rarely (e.g. gardening)
* Whiplash injury to your neck during a vehicle collision

Physical trauma can result in the following dysfunctions:

* Muscle Spasm
* Torn muscle/ligament/tendon fibres
* Dislocation
* Inflammation
* Swelling

Some or all of these factors can contribute to pain after a physical trauma.

Poor Posture
Your ache may also be as a result of poor posture. This can be the case if your occupation involves any of the following:

* Sitting at a desk
* Working on a computer
* Driving long journeys

Any of these occupations that put your body in unnatural positions for prolonged periods of time will inevitably take their toll on your body’s muscle system. Prolonged placement of your body in these unnatural positions will cause your musculature to become short and hold increased tension. This contraction of your muscles eventually leads to pain.

Stress
The third and often forgotten cause of musculoskeletal pain is stress. Some examples of stress that that you may have experienced include

* Bereavement
* Work Stress
* Exam Stress
* Relationship
* Financial

When you are subjected to stress, the following 3 chemicals are released into your system:

* Epinephrine
* Nor-epinephrine
* Cortisol

One effect that these 3 chemicals have on your body is an increase in muscle tension.
This increase in muscle tension leads to the following occurrences:

* Build up of metabolic wastes and toxins
* Lack of oxygen reaching muscles
* An increase in fluid retention

As a result, sustained periods of stress in your life leads to chronic aches and pain.

The first step in our approach to treatment is to take a case history. This involves asking questions such as:

* How did your pain/injury manifest itself?
* Where are your symptoms?
* How long is your pain/injury present?
* Has it deteriorated since the initial onset?

By asking questions like those above, we can begin to build up a picture of what dysfunctions are present. Once this is finished, some physical assessments may need to be carried out to confirm what dysfunctions are present. At this point, in most cases, the root-cause of your condition is identified.

A treatment plan is then designed to specifically target your dysfunctions. The number of treatments required depends on a number of factors.

* Your age (younger people respond quicker)
* The severity of your condition (more severe injuries can take longer to resolve)
* How long your condition is present (the longer a condition is present the longer it takes to resolve)

Deep Tissue Therapy is the most effective method that I have come across to eliminate/reduce pain of musculoskeletal origin and has an 80 - 90% success rate with this type of pain.

Treatment is performed through light clothing, takes about 30 minutes and costs €50 per treatment. The number of treatments required depends on how long the condition has been present.

The following are typical treatment requirements:

* Neck and shoulder pain present for a year would require about 5 – 7 treatments to resolve (However, a substantial pain intensity reduction of 50% or more would be expected after the second or third treatment).
* A backache that has been present for 2 weeks would typically only require 2 – 3 treatments.
* A condition present for a number of years may take more than 10 treatments to resolve.
* Some serious conditions present for years may not resolve completely, but can be substantially improved and controlled by regular maintenance treatments.

Body-type is also taken into account, for example an elderly lady would be treated more gently compared to a rugby player in his twenties. However, both types could expect an effective response to the treatment.

Generally treatments are undertaken once or twice per week. When chronic conditions are resolved, normally 2-3 maintenance treatments are undertaken a month apart to ensure that your condition doesn’t relapse. That way, if any of your dysfunctions show signs of returning, the problem can be nipped in the bud.

In addition, a stretching program can also be devised tailored to your unique condition. This can be followed post-treatment to prevent dysfunctions recurring.

Testimonials...

“I suffered a broken leg. For a few months after the cast came off I was unable to perform a lot of basic tasks such as walking. When I attended the Pain Relief Clinic, I discovered that there was still a problem with my knee that was preventing my full recovery. After a few treatments this was corrected and I can now walk and do all other tasks without any problem”
Ms. U McCarthy, South Circular Road, Limerick.

“I had very bad pains down both of my legs and I couldn’t walk properly. I highly recommend the treatment and I found Tony very good”
Ms. P Daly, Shannon, Co. Clare.
