This fabric was introduced to Africa around middle of the nineteenth century by African soldiers. The soldiers took these vibrant fabrics to Africa after serving their commissions in Indonesia to use when they get home. Some of the soldiers started making these fabrics for sale in their home countries but they could not keep up with the high demand of the product because of the slow process of the local machines that were used at the time.

Several European manufacturers like Vlisco took up the process of producing these fabrics in larger quantity and started supplying to Africa. VLISCO designed their fabrics exclusively for the beautiful African women and Yes men too as envisioned by those African soldiers. A lot of these materials are given a traditional name as soon as they hit the African soil as they hold special meanings and are used for many different occasions and therefore passed on from generation to generation.
