What’s all the fuss about Mozart?

KenDu Music presents:
A Music appreciation course at Rosemount in Julianstown

Have you ever caught a snippet of classical music on your car radio that left you fascinated, intrigued and a little bit furious? The latter, because you were made painfully aware that you didn’t really have the wherewithal to place this piece of art into its proper context?

Dorothy Alioth has the answer to your predicament. She offers you an introduction into “high-brow” music with no attitudes. Yes, she will start (briefly) with antiquity – where we actually know very little -, bring you into a millennium of sacred music, culminating, in the abstract wonders of polyphony. But, truth be told, she will soon focus on the masters who have shaped our understanding and enjoyment of orchestral music. Composers like Bach, Vivaldi, Händel, Beethoven and Schumann will loom large, but be prepared to discover trendsetters like Corelli, Haydn, Telemann and Viotti.

In the 21st century, a course like this has to be multimedia. However you are taken by the hand by a musician, who may have come to her vocation late in life following a call of destiny!

Lessons, of about one hour’s duration, are held in a chapel by the banks of the Nanny, surrounded by a garden and arboretum, which can be explored at leisure. A subscription entails eight lessons (not cast in stone!) preferably weekly, at ten Euro apiece. Each course will have between ten and twenty subscribers. Tea and refreshments will, of course, be served. - Because this should be fun.
The course leader, Dorothy Alioth, has a BA in Music and French, a Masters in Cultural policy & Arts administration and teaches violin and music theory to all ages and levels. Currently, she is working on obtaining a diploma in Community group and Music teaching with the RIAM. She was a member of the DIT Conservatory of Music Symphony Orchestra for six years and now plays with the Wexford Sinfonia. To make things a bit more interesting, she is also a QFA, a qualified financial adviser. dorothy@alioth.eu
