Peaceful, tranquil – adult guests only, do come soon.

The Wall family extend to you a very warm and heartfelt Céad Míle Fáilte to Hanora’s Cottage and to the Nire Valley.

In 1967 a very young enthusiastic couple, Seamus and Mary Wall with their young son Michael, came to live in a tiny two roomed cottage beside the church and river in the beautiful Nire Valley.

The little cottage was first built in 1891 for Seamus’ great grandparents, John and Norrie (Hanora) O’Gorman. Then came their daughter Hanora, with her husband Jim Harte who in turn passed the cottage on to Seamus’ parents Hanora and Michael Wall. So when Seamus and Mary came to live here “Hanoras’ seemed the perfect name for the little cottage that became their home.

In 1969 / 70 the first, very humble, alterations commenced at Hanoras Cottage, a few years later another little extension and so it went on until finally on Sunday evening 11th May 1986 the first guests were welcomed, with open arms to Hanoras Cottage. They were a German couple who had come in over the gap in the Comeragh Mountains on horseback!! They could not believe their eyes to find accommodation and the Wall family, by now grown in size to Michael, Cathal, Frances, Áine and Eoin, could not believe their luck.

Over the years the tiny cottage has been carefully and lovingly converted into an exclusive, multi award winning country house and restaurant, which has never lost the love, warmth and welcome around which it was created.

Sadly, Seamus is no longer with us but his memory and the strength of his love will forever be a part of Hanoras Cottage as will his bread recipes for which he was famous and which he left with us. Continuing on in the very capable hands of Mary, Judith and Eoin, Hanoras Cottage, your little oasis in the Comeragh Mountains, is waiting to welcome you.
