The Programme was launched on 27th September 2011. The purpose of the launch was to kick-start a city and county wide consultation and awareness raising exercise. The feedback and data gathered during this consultation exercise will help inform the Galway Age Friendly City and County Strategy and Plan. The strategy and plan will contain actions that government agencies, community organisations and people of all ages can work towards to make Galway City and County an age friendly place to live.

The process is being led by an Alliance Board which is hosted by the County and City Development Boards. The Age Friendly Alliance Board is chaired by John Concannon of Failte Ireland and includes the County Manager Martina Moloney, the City Manager Joe O Neill, along with the heads of relevant organisations such as the HSE, the Garda Síochána, VEC, Community and Voluntary Sector and others as well as the Ageing Well Network.
