'Contemporary Dance' is a popular form of dance which developed during the middle portion of the twentieth century and has since grown to become one of the dominating performance genres for formally trained dancers throughout the world, with particularly strong popularity in the U.S. and Europe.
Pina Bausch, Merce Cunningham , Martha Graham are some of the artists who developed this style of movement, who are household names.
Although originally informed by and borrowing from classical, modern, and jazz styles, it has since come to incorporate its own distinctive elements. In terms of the focus of its technique, contemporary dance tends to utilize both the strong and controlled legwork of ballet as well as the modern dance's focus of finding your own centre & true anatomical alignment . Some classes can use concepts of 'contract-release', floor work, 'fall and recovery' and more recently are beginning to utilise somatic practices like Body-Mind Centring, Authentic Movement within the classes. Most classes incorporate an element of improvisational based exercises and creative visualisations to stimulate textures and form in the body to promote better fluidity and flow of movement from the participant. This is a very enjoyable part of class.
Characteristic of modern dance is dynamic changes in rhythm, speed, and direction with diverse music to accompany each exercise, which is very exciting to experience.
