Hi, I’m Andy Short, founder of Sumatra Environmental Education Concern, or SEEC. After more than a decade of experience teaching in Sumatra and at the same time seeing first hand the huge environmental challenges that Indonesia is facing as a country, our team has decided to take our organisation, and environmental education in Sumatra, to the next level.

SEEC’s main objective is to continue to take classes of children, increasingly from the most under-privileged inner-city schools in Indonesia, on a selection of environmental field trips to allow them to engage directly in nature and conservation projects in the field. With the help of environmentalists who care - people like yourself - we will give these kids opportunities to put into practice the topics that are essential for their formal education, but at the same time help to foster in them a real sense of empathy and joy for the amazing natural environment and wild species of Indonesia which many of them have never really had experience of. Of course, groups of adults will be equally welcome, too!

Our expertise in modern teaching methods, together with an understanding of lesson planning and individual learners’ needs have allowed us to put together a suite of mobile lessons on many different environmental topics, that are fun and dynamic, but also structured and memorable.
We at SEEC understand that sitting a child down on the floor and talking to them about orangutans for an hour or two doesn’t always teach them anything. Our 3-part programmes involve in-school pre-trip preparation and study, after that comes the trip itself where they will do in-the-field observation and activities, and then finally post trip reflection and conclusion. All of these stages will be handled by our teachers working alongside the students’ own school teachers.
These educational trips will be offered free of charge for the majority of schools we work with.

In addition to this, SEEC also provides environmental education consultancy and planning for other conservation organisations who want to implement effective and enjoyable educational programmes for children and adults, whether on-site throughout their network of field projects, or to maximise the reach of their activism, awareness-raising, and campaigns.

Please do consider helping us with a donation. These funds will enable us to register officially as an organisation in Indonesia and then work to develop and expand our educational activities. Our focus is always on the children who will be most affected by environmental change here, but who are also in the position to take responsibility for it and do the most good for the future of Sumatra, its ecosystems, its wildlife and, ultimately, its people.

Thank you.
