Background
City University of Hong Kong (CityU) Student Development Service (SDS) initiated the Servant Leadership Training Programme (SLTP) with the objective of developing a positive attitude and a service-driven mind-set in students. Participants received training in the core principles of servant leadership according Robert Greenleaf that puts ‘others-first’ on everyday practice.
SLTP provides a platform for them to develop planning, organizational and leadership skills in the service of others and to learn to work with teammates from various academic disciplines and collaborate with people from all walks of lives.
Nearly 180 students contributed over 2,000 service hours for 350 beneficiaries from over 10 NGOs since November 2015 when the programme started.
Programme Objectives
The programme primarily aim is to enable students to redefine their roles in a positive way, analyses issues from a wider perspective and reflect on their life purposes through service learning experiences. As a result, the program can install good work attitude, communication and a service-driven mind set into our students.
Development
In the year of 2016-17, over 40 students act as Senior Servant Leaders and 130 students were recruited and 6 subgroups were formed to deliver services in three directions as:
Walkie Talkers: Conduct cultural and eco tours for non-local students;
Wellness Transformers: Provide fitness and wellness activities for low-income primary school students or disadvantaged groups;
Web Makers: Provide webpage design and production services for NGOs and various university programmes
Social Walkmen: Explore social issues through community study and action learning;
WebXplorers: Serve as tutor for primary school children through online learning platforms;
Wise Walkers: Provide guidance and mentoring for the children of handicapped parents
