The Bridges Street Market was built in 1953 and is one of the few remaining structures in Hong Kong designed and constructed in the International Modernist style attributed to the Bauhaus school of art. Part of the existing market building falls within the former site of the American Congregational Mission Preaching House where Dr Sun Yat-sen was baptised in 1883. In recognition of its historical significance and architectural merit, the Antiquities Advisory Board accorded a Grade 3 status to the Bridges Street Market in 2011.

The market is located in an area where Hong Kong’s oldest newspapers used to operate. The Secretary for Development, under the third batch of the Revitalising Historic Buildings Through Partnership Scheme, .has approved in 2013 the Consolidated Project Proposal submitted by Journalism Education Foundation to revitalise the Bridges Street Market into the Hong Kong News-Expo which will be an education/visitor centre with news as the main theme.
