In the early 70s, there were only a few chiropractors practising in Hong Kong. All of them graduated from overseas. Their credentials, however, were not recognized locally. It was through much lobbying that legislature was drafted and passed. In 1993, the Chiropractors Registration Ordinance was passed and chiropractic becomes one of the registered primary health care practitioners in Hong Kong.

Relating to the local training of chiropractors, the Government has adopted a passive attitude towards the establishment of chiropractic courses in local tertiary institution. This is understandable in view of the small number of chiropractic practitioners in Hong Kong. In fact, all those who practise in Hong Kong at present graduated from overseas, including USA, Canada, UK and Australia. Despite the cry by different chiropractic associations for a chiropractic college in Hong Kong in order to foster more chiropractors, there has been no positive response from the Government.

Consequent to this, the number of chiropractic practitioners practising in Hong Kong has been increasing in slow pace. In 1976, 4 chiropractors practised in Hong Kong. As of today, there are around 160 practitioners. After three and a half decades, only 156 chiropractors more have been registered and served the community. Each chiropractor thus serves 47,000 Hong Kong people or so. This is far from sufficient. To improve the spinal health of the population of Hong Kong, there should be more chiropractors.

In the past two years, some of the chiropractors felt the urge to erect a reputable local chiropractic college, and to craft the future of chiropractic profession in Hong Kong. Thus the idea of the Hong Kong Chiropractic College Foundation was born.
