Το Κρατικό Μουσείο Σύγχρονης Τέχνης (ΚΜΣΤ) ιδρύθηκε το 1997 και στεγάζεται στο συγκρότημα της Μονής Λαζαριστών στη Σταυρούπολη Θεσσαλονίκης. Πυρήνας των συλλογών αλλά και των εκθέσεων του μουσείου αποτελεί η Συλλογή Γιώργου Κωστάκη, η οποία απαρτίζεται από 1277 έργα τέχνης (πίνακες ζωγραφικής, σχέδια, κατασκευές, πορσελάνες κ.α.) των σημαντικότερων καλλιτεχνών της ρωσικής πρωτοπορίας (πρώτες δεκαετίες του 20ου αι., Malevich, Popova, Klucis, Rodchenko, Kliun κ.ά.), ενώ το Μουσείο διαθέτει και μία αξιόλογη συλλογή έργων σύγχρονων εικαστικών.
Το Κέντρο Σύγχρονης Τέχνης Θεσσαλονίκης (ΚΣΤΘ), αποτελεί τμήμα του ΚΜΣΤ και από το 2002 στεγάζεται στην Aποθήκη Β1 στο Λιμάνι της Θεσσαλονίκης, φιλοξενώντας περιοδικές εκθέσεις του ΚΜΣΤ αλλά και δικές του παραγωγές.
Στα χρόνια λειτουργίας του το ΚΜΣΤ έχει αναπτύξει μια εκτεταμένη εκθεσιακή δραστηριότητα με τη διοργάνωση μεγάλων εκθέσεων, συνεργασίες –συμπαραγωγές εκθέσεων με μουσεία μοντέρνας και σύγχρονης τέχνης του εξωτερικού και της χώρας, την έκδοση ειδικών καταλόγων, τη διοργάνωση διεθνών επιστημονικών συνεδρίων, τον σχεδιασμό και τη λειτουργία ειδικών ιστοσελίδων, την οργάνωση εκπαιδευτικών δράσεων. Επίσης, το ΚΜΣΤ είναι ο φορέας διοργανωτής της Μπιενάλε Σύγχρονης Τέχνης Θεσσαλονίκης, που πραγματοποιείται από το 2007 στην πόλη με τη συνδρομή πολλών φορέων πολιτισμού.

The State Museum of Contemporary Art (SMCA) was founded in 1997 and is housed in the Moni Lazariston building complex in Stavroupoli, Thessaloniki. The core of the museum’s collections and exhibitions is the George Costakis Collection, which consists of 1277 artworks (paintings, sketches, constructions, china, etc.) of the most significant artists of the russian avant-garde period (first decades of the 20th century, Malevich, Popova, Klucis, Rodchenko, Kliun and more),. The Museum also owns an interesting collection of works by contemporary artists.
The Contemporary Art Center of Thessaloniki (CACT) is an independent department of the SMCA and is housed in Warehouse B1 at the Port of Thessaloniki since 2002, hosting periodic exhibitions of the Museum as well as its own productions.
In its years of operation, the SMCA has developed extensive exhibition activities through the holding of large exhibitions, collaborations/co-production of exhibitions with modern and contemporary art museums in the country and abroad, through the publication of special catalogues, the organisation of international scientific conferences, the design and running of special websites, the implementation of educational activities. In addition, the SMCA is the organising institution of the Thessaloniki Biennale of Contemporary Art, which is being organised since 2007 in Thessaloniki with the collaboration of many cultural institutions.
