L’area che comprende la Val di Cornia si estende, in Toscana, dall’entroterra delle Colline Metallifere fino alla fascia costiera pianeggiante, eccetto il promontorio di Piombino. La costa è bagnata dal mar Tirreno e Ligure. Il confine sud-orientale del mar Ligure, che lo delimita dal mar Tirreno, corre tra Capo Corso e il promontorio di Piombino, passando attraverso il canale di Corsica, l'Isola d'Elba e il canale di Piombino. La Val di Cornia comprende i territori dei comuni di Piombino, San Vincenzo, Campiglia Marittima, Suvereto, Sassetta e Monteverdi Marittimo.

La “Cornia” ha quattro affluenti, da sinistra il rio Secco e il torrente Milìa, da destra il torrente Massera e il Riomerdancio. Il fiume, dalla zona di San Lorenzo fino a Tor del Sale, dove sfocia nel mar Tirreno, è arginato e canalizzato.
