Our hotel is less than a minute’s walk from the Luxembourg Gardens, in a lovely calm cul-de-sac. This small road existed in the 16th century and was known as the “La Madeleine”, between the rue Gay Lussac and Boulevard Saint-Michel. Opposite the hotel is a house that is classified as a Historical Monument and it is here that Madame de Maintenon looked after the children of Madame de Montespan, who was one of King Louis 14th’s favorites. In later years, Madame de Maintenon became the last secret wife of the sun king… At this time the Luxembourg Gardens reached all the way to our street as the Boulevard Saint-Michel did not extend as far yet.
It was probably for the calm and its setting that Sigmund Freud chose to stay in our hotel in June 1885 (although it was known as Hotel de la Paix back then). It was during this trip to Paris that Freud met Professor Jean-Martin Charcot (a neurologist and specialist on hypnosis at the Salpetriere hospital) and he influenced him greatly in his creation and development of psychoanalysis.
There are 24 rooms spread out over the six floors of this hotel (we have a nice elevator!) and there are two extra rooms on the ground floor of the neighboring building.
Walk into our reception area and you will be immediately charmed by the place – the staffs are friendly and helpful, the setting is attractive, with an old style bar from the early 20th century with a zinc top and decorated with hop flowers.
