L'Ensai fait partie, avec l'Ensae, du Groupe des écoles nationales d'économie et de statistique (Génes) qui rassemble les activités d'enseignement et de recherche de l'Insee. Elle est habilitée par la CTI (Commission des Titres d’Ingénieur) à délivrer le diplôme d’ingénieur qui confère le grade de Master.

Créée en 1994, l'Ensai est implantée depuis 1996 dans le cadre verdoyant du campus de Ker Lann, aux portes de Rennes. L’Ensai forme des cadres de haut niveau qualifiés dans le traitement et l’analyse de l’information. Issus du cycle ingénieur ou du cycle fonctionnaire, les élèves possèdent en fin de cursus une triple compétence «statistique-économétrique-informatique» unanimement reconnue dans tous les secteurs d’activité économique.
Les élèves civils parviennent en trois ans au grade de master comme ingénieurs statisticiens.
Les élèves fonctionnaires deviennent en deux ans attachés statisticiens de l'Insee ; leur formation à l'Ensai est rémunérée environ 1 700 € net par mois, primes comprises.

ENSAI is the top graduate school specializing in Statistics in France (a French Grande Ecole, and more specifically, one of the prestigious écoles d’ingénieurs). Historically associated with INSEE (French National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies) and with funding from the French Ministry of Finance, ENSAI offers six specializations in the fields of Advanced Statistical Engineering,
Biostatistics, Health Econometrics, Quantitative Marketing and Customer Relationship Management, Risk Management and Financial Engineering, and Statistical and Decision-Making Systems. ENSAI also offers PhD supervision in these specializations after graduation.

Admission to ENSAI is usually preceded by two years of post-secondary, intensive preparatory classes in either Mathematics or Economics, followed by nationally competitive examinations. ENSAI's education trains its students to become qualified specialists in Statistics, capable of information processing and analysis. Students acquire threefold expertise in Statistics,Quantitative Economics and Econometrics, and Computer Science, universally recognized in all professional sectors. They are sought after and highly paid by industry.

Upon completion of the 3 year-program, graduates become full-fledged statisticians. They obtain the Diplôme d'ingénieur, equivalent to a Master of Science (MSc) in Statistics (representative of a total of 5 years of higher education and 300 ECTS credits). ENSAI has been accredited to award this degree by the French Accreditation Board for Engineering Education, the CTI (Commission des Titres d'Ingénieur).
