THE SOCIETY FOR COPTIC ARCHAEOLOGY
Founded in 1934, the Society for Coptic Archaeology is the scholarly world ́s only learned body devoted specifically to the field of Coptic studies in all its branches. It exists to promote, encourage, and support research in the many specialties that fall within the area of Coptic history and letters. The Society ́s headquarters is in Cairo, Egypt, where its library of some 16,000 volumes is housed. This library is the society ́s main scholarly resource comprising holdings in Coptic philology, history, theology, papyrology, Gnostic studies and art history; it provides a unique research tool for established and younger scholars The library maintains up-to-date holdings of monograph series and periodicals in classical, Late Antique, and Byzantine studies, as well as standard reference works and collections of articles by scholars of the past and present. The Society lends its authority to associated professionals who need to work on original material in Egypt, both for manuscripts and for the visual arts.
The Society has close cooperative arrangements with the International Association for Coptic Studies. Visiting members of the IACS use the Society ́s premises as research headquarters. Adjoining the Library, the premises comprise reading rooms and a Conference Hall. The Society ́s other main area of service is its publications. Since its beginning it has published a Bulletin and has sponsored series of monographs in the areas of manuscript catalogues, texts and documents, and the history of art. It has produced for example, H.J.Polotsky ́s Studies of coptic syntax, The History of the Patriarchs of Sawirus ibn al-Mukaffa’ , and Burmester’s Ordination rites of the Coptic Church. lt has also sponsored the excavations of the Monastery of Phoebammon, south of Luxor and published its reports in 1981. The Society encourages submissions of articles and studies for its publication series.
The formation and training of young professionals is a cause especially important to the Society. Students preparing doctoral theses in areas of Coptic studies are encouraged to apply for readerships in the Society ́s library.
