Tunis Village is a small agriculture & fishing village overlooking Lake Qarun where Many famous writers, intellectuals, artists and architects fell in love with the place and bought and built earth architecture houses in it. Evelynne, a Swiss Lady was the first to come to the village in the 70s and built a house and a pottery workshop which taught generations of locals a refinement of their art, which has reached international recognition.
Several local potters have started pottery schools and sales points since then, which made the village known for pottery work. The pottery, mostly decorated with native art, depicting the things they see in daily life, like donkeys, cows, ducks and agricultural products. In addition, Tunis Village is also home to a caricature museum, a House built by the famous architect, Eng. Hassan Fathy. There are also a few hotels, boutique hotels, and camp sites scattered around the village.
One of the special characteristics of Fayoum is its diversification of the locals. They split into 3 categories; farmers, Nomads, and Fisherman. All of which can be seen in and around Tunis. Because of the closeness of Tunis Village to the edge of the desert, Nomads are known to pass by every now and then for trade activities.
Lake Qarun is Egypt's largest salt lake. Despite having shrunk over the past few thousand years, it's about 215 square kilometers with a small island in the middle. The lake was historically a fresh water lake, but since it receives agriculture drainage water from the canals in Fayoum, it has turned salty. It is considered an excellent site for bird watching, sailing, windsurfing, rowing, and fishing.
Lake Qarun and more specifically Tunis Village are especially known for Bird Migration. More than 200 species of birds migrate to Lake Qarun during the winter, coming from Eastern Europe & Western Asia. More specifically, Duck migration starts in late August and ends at March can be viewed all around the Lake, and specifically in Tunis Village and in Wadi El Rayan.als this place and the area around is dusty creating and dry, creating

Fayoum
The Fayoum governorate falls into five smaller cities. Fayoum is the capital and largest city, lying at the centre of the depression. The governorate has three main characteristic landscapes: the rural centre, the surrounding desert and the lake shores of Wadi Al-Rayan and Lake Qarun. Fayoum, the capital, was first known as Crocodilopolis -- referring to God Sobik of Fayoum represented by a man with the head of a crocodile. It has also been called the Venice of Egypt due to the many canals that run through it from Bahr Youssef.
The Fayoum depression has played an integral role in every culture that has swept through Egypt, from the Pharaohs to the Greeks and Romans, to the Coptic Christians and finally the Muslim Arabs. Beyond its human history, the area has long been distinguished by its natural beauty; its lakes, palm trees, pristine desert areas, fossil remains, bird sanctuaries, and rural quietude, offering an unmatched natural richness to visitors.
Fayoum is a city with a quiet reputation yet much to offer -- particularly at this time of year. From October till April, Fayoum enjoys a warm climate (22-28 degrees Celsius), also offering the opportunity to escape the noise and crowd for a weekend. The list of activities available in Fayoum is long. Did you know, for example, that you can follow the traces of Alexander the Great on camel in Fayoum? Or that the city offers 600km of desert hiking trail, and that you can get closer there to birds than anywhere else? This is, of course, in addition to the usual sightseeing programs to various historical sites.
