Tarlov neural cysts;

We have now completed a full follow-up of last year’s patients, who have been operated in both private and public hospital. All the patients had been given up by other doctors, and had typically been living with pain in the sacrum and in the legs/buttocks for multiple years. 90 % of our patients experience a considerable improvement and do no longer need pain-relieving medicine. 10% continuously experience pain and still undergo regular check-ups and rehabilitation. A success rate of 90 % on patients who were previously thought of as incurable/inoperable must overall be considered very satisfying.

Tarlov Cysts are fluid filled cysts typically placed in the sacrum. Around 5-10 % of the Danish population are thought to have these cysts without showing any symptoms.

A few (15.000-30.000 Danes) patients around 5-15% do however show symptoms and feel pain as a result of Tarlov cysts, these patients could benefit from a steroid injection in the sacrum, and if this is not enough, a microsurgical treatment.

Usually the x-ray doctor will not have mentioned the Tarlov cysts on the description of MR-Scan as the cysts are so common and around 85-90% show no symptoms of discomfort. If you do suffer from the nuisances described below, you can ask for a cd with your scans and get your doctor, chiropractor or physiotherapist to have a look at them, to determine whether or not you have Tarlov cysts in the sacrum.

It is important to find the correct patients, who show real symptoms of the Tarlov cysts, and to correctly place an epidural steroid injection in the sacrum and also offer a microsurgical treatment to close the Tarlov cysts, thereby preventing them from reappearing.

Only a few surgeons in the world offer Microsurgical treatment of Tarlov cysts. Senior consultant dr. Dorte Clemmensen possesses great knowledge, scientific interest and documentation, and a lot of surgical routine when Microsurgical operation the Tarlov cysts.

Symptoms:

Tarlov Cysts typically cause pain in the sacrum/tailbone. These pains vary in strength and are typically worsened by physical activity, coughing and standing. They typically cause nerve pains in the leg/legs, in the pelvic floor, and rarely the cysts can cause bladder-intestine and sexual disturbance. The symptoms usually improve after lying down for 30-60 minutes.

Treatment:

The first treatment is typically an ultrasound-guided steroid injection in the sacrum; this is enough for some patients. If the symptoms reappear it may be necessary for the patient to undergo a microsurgical operation.

This operation is done using a microscope; Dorte Clemmensen’s research group has published an article describing a success rate of 98 % when closing the Tarlov cysts.

By being able to choose the right patients to undergo surgery Dorte Clemmensen maintains a very high success rate of 90%. With the last year’s operations in both the private and public hospital 90 % have reduced pain just 3 months after the operation and most have stopped using pain-relieving drugs.

You can book a time for a consultation and an assessment on +4531319470. If your symptoms appear to be caused by the cysts you will be offered an ultrasound-guided steroid injection in the sacrum.

If any indication is found that an operation is necessary, this will be performed on Varde Privatehospital.
