WJT was founded in 1987 by Bev Aronovitch and in it's first season, welcomed an audience of 700 people.

After operating as a community theatre organization for several years, in 1992 WJT joined the Professional Association of Canadian Theatres. Since then, we have annually produced a three-play season. Our programming runs the gamut from new work to acclaimed classics, musicals, and outreach.

WJT is the only Winnipeg theatre in the past decade to present a new play that became a Finalist for the Governor General's Award in Drama, and was called, "one of the gutsier theatre companies in Canada" by The Globe and Mail. Our playwrights have gone on to see their shows produced or programmed at other Winnipeg theatres as well as Toronto, Ottawa, and Israel, and our actors often grace other stages in the city as well as across the country.
enfeld, and Jonas Chernick. Recently WJT has taken on ambitious projects such as Way to Heaven which featured seven students from the Gray Academy of Jewish Education on our stage.

WJT began a new era in 2014 under the interim artistic leadership of our longest serving Artistic Director Kayla Gordon. After presenting the Canadian premiere of Joshua Harmon’s award-winning Bad Jews, the board of directors announced Ari Weinberg as WJT’s newest Artistic Director. He began his tenure in the fall of 2015, and will lead the company's 30th anniversary in 2017-18.
