Shindo Yoshin-ryū is a traditional school of Japanese martial arts founded in the 1864 by a Kuroda clan samurai named Matsuoka Katsunosuke after becoming convinced that much of the late Edo period jujutsu had lost much of its military usefulness. The result is a sogo bujutsu or integrated martial system that combines classical jujutsu and various weapons arts contemporary to samurai of the day.

In Takamura-ha Shindo Yoshin-ryū, jujutsu (grapping) emphasizes grace and natural body movement while often demonstrating soft and subtle application. Our understanding of technique relies heavily on scientific principles. Nearly half of the curriculum in TSYR contain the study of weapons such as kenjutsu (fencing), battojutsu (drawing of the sword) and tantojutsu (knife). Not just tacked on for posterity, weapons and empty-handed techniques share common principles throughout.

Today Takamura-ha Shindo Yoshin-ryū is headed by Tobin Threadgill sensei at the hombu dojo (headquarters) located in Evergreen, Colorado. Threadgill sensei holds a menkyo kaiden and was a student of the late Yukiyoshi Takamura sensei. The Takamura ha Shindo Yoshin Kai has dojos all over world.
