The Synovial Stem Cell Cartilage Engineering group studies the formation of tissue engineered cartilage materials for the treatment of cartilage injuries with the ultimate goal of providing a clinically viable treatment option for cartilage injuries. Since cartilage injuries are known to predispose individuals to future development of osteoarthritis – a debilitating joint disease with no known cure and limited treatment options – an effective, long term treatment option for these injuries has the potential to significantly reduce the clinical and financial impact of this disease and greatly improve the lives of individuals with cartilage injuries.

Our collaborative team of researchers includes scholars from biology, veterinary science, engineering and medicine from the University of Calgary and the University of Alberta. In 2013, we received a Collaborative Research and Innovation Opportunities (CRIO) grant from Alberta Innovates to pursue studies to develop clinically viable cartilage constructs to treat articular cartilage injuries.
