HISTORY OF THE SOBEY SCHOOL OF BUSINESS
Founded in 1802, Saint Mary's is one of Canada's oldest universities. Its business school has an equally long heritage.
The Faculty of Commerce - as it was first called - was created in 1934, and was one of the first business programs in Canada. In August 1992, Saint Mary's paid tribute to one of Canada's premier business leaders by naming its Faculty of Commerce in honour of the late Frank H. Sobey, founder of Empire Company Limited, Stellarton, Nova Scotia. Ground for a new state-of-the-art home of the Business School named after the Sobey family was broken in October 1996, and the Sobey Building was officially opened two years later.
Today, the Sobey School of Business is the largest and most respected business school in Atlantic Canada, a region that encompasses New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and Newfoundland.
With nearly 3000 students, the undergraduate Commerce program attracts students from around the globe.
