My name is Audrey Rippingale. I am a truck driver from Campbell River. I have been running trucks and equipment for over a decade. I am founder, owner and operator for She Works She Plays. This is my own creation, a small mobile business supplying women with industrial work, safety and outdoor wear.
The frustration of not being able to find workwear like gloves, pants and hi-viz apparel drove me crazy. I drove concrete trucks for many years and my hands were always raw because I had to work without gloves to be able to feel the equipment I was running. Concrete is not forgiving on the skin, lol. I realized I was not alone and many women working in trades and industry face the same challenges. So I decided to do something about it.
I always wanted to run my own truck so now I have a 1995 Kenworth and converted semi-trailer that sets up as a store filled with women's work wear. I travel to communities across the province of BC and a little into Alberta. I try to get to women everywhere, but have realized I am not superwoman and truly try my best to do what I can.
I am not an online store because I have no shipping address as I travel, generally doing 6 weeks at a time on the road to cover as much ground as I can in one area of the province, and then go home to Vancouver Island to stock up. All the inventory I have is with me in my trailer as I travel, and is all a personal investment. I work and live in my rig 24/7 while on the road. It is a tough job as I juggle running a trucking business and retail business, but is truly a labour of love.
I was told I was 10 years too early for a women's work wear store, but I will do what it takes to prove them wrong. Our numbers are growing daily as more women realize they can, and want to work in non-traditionally female lines of work. I absolutely love that, and want to do what I can to encourage and support women working in industry and trades. This is no big corporation, just a chick with a truck! Audrey Rippingale
