Dorval Legion Branch 245 celebrating their 50th anniversary (1962-2012). Before 1962, a group of employees at Dorval International Airport felt that some sort of Veterans association should be formed. As many of the groups were veterans from the Canadian Armed Forces, it was agreed that the group headed by Mr. Ernest Chenier, Mr. Grant MacLaughlan and Mr.Hilton Braithwaite should apply for the Legion Branch Charter. As a first step, 16 members signed an application for a charter and became paid up members of the Legion and premises.

The 16 signatures were: Ernest Grenier, Grant MacLaughlan, Hilton Braithwaite, E. Fyfe, M. Chevrette, G. Merrilees, G. Turgeon, E. Woods, J.P. Vincent, J. Girard, D. MacDonald, L. Fallon, A. De Lasabonière, R. Malo, O. Jalbert and C.R. Hilliker.

Guided by West District Commander Royal Canadian Legion, Gerry Mass and aided by President Jim Doyle and Active President Pat Archieri of Lachine Branch 90 and J.F. Goulet, manager at Dorval Airport, on October 19, 1961.

Apparently, Mr. Ernest Chenier (president) Mr. Grant MacLaughlan (treasurer) and Mr. Hilton Braithwaite (secretary) were nominated unofficially while waiting for the Legion Charter.

Dorval Legion Branch 245 became a reality with the granting of the charter on March 07th, 1962.

At that moment they held official elections. The first Executive Committee:

In the beginning they rented an hold house at 504 Marshall Avenue belonging to Mrs. Vaillancourt, thanks to the reference by Mr. Greg Ravenda. They had their meetings sitting on beer boxes and egg boxes for tables and chairs. One day, Mr. J.P. Goulet, Airport Manager, called in Mr. Grant MacLaughlan in his office. Wondering the purpose of the meeting, to his surprise Mr. Goulet offered him surplus equipment for the sum of $1.00. Finally they could get rid of the beer and egg crates. At that moment, many members of the group encouraged by this donation, decided to renovate the old house. Materials were forthcoming from the airport, Bertrand Lumber and a few members. They went about building a bar, enlarged washroom, and cloakroom besides doing electrical and plumbing work.

Later the Legion needed a flag pole. The airport installed one and the R.C.M.P. donated the flag. After that, Cde Reg Clancy had relatives in the clothing business. He was able to obtain at a reasonable price Legion blue jackets. After that they purchased berets, ties pins and patches. At that moment, they started to look like an official Legion.

Later, Cde A.E. (Jim) Green was a member of the RAF Ferry Command Association and requested Dominion Command to recognize them. Dominion Command permitted them to be eligible to become Legion member. Mr. Lagrave, Mr. Don Vicar and Mr. A. Lockett (Mr. Parade) for years looked after parade and colors.

Eventually, they decided to have a permanent barman. The first one was Mr. Marcel Lord (porter from the airport). He lived in the second level story of the building with his wife. They also took care of cleaning the premises. Apparently, he was an ex wrestler and had no problem taking care of situations if ever they arise.

In the following successful, if sometimes turbulent three years, ardent by the addition in 1963 by the Ladies Auxiliary and an increased membership, the Dorval Legion Branch 245 was getting solidly established. Cde A.E. Green was a Dorval businessman and former manager of the Dorval Chamber of commerce, became deeply involved and wrote the first By Laws for the Branch and stayed on that committee for 20 years beside being 1st Vice, 2nd Vice and 3rd Vice President and in December 1991 wrote a story about our "Beginning".

Then in 1964, a bomb dropped. Mr. Dairy Lumen advised that Dural Products, next door, wanted to purchase the property. Finally, in 1965, Dural offered the Legion $12,000 to buy a property on Jenkins. The last day of closure was October 2nd, 1965.

In 1965, Cde R.B. Taylor, president; Cde A.E. (Jim) Green, Cde D.D. Gordon Carmichael, Cde Hilton Braithwaite, secretary; Cde H.J. Quelle, were the group, with the help of Mayor Sarto Desnoyers, that had to make the arrangements to find a new place. They found a piece of land belonging to Mr. Cohen and purchased it with the money that was given to them by Dural. Now they had to build a commercial building. They found Mr. Cook an architect to do the plans.

On October 5th they moved in to the building and made preparations to finally do the official opening on December 5th, 1965 with approximately 43 members.

In 1966, with the new president D.D. Gordon Carmichael, Security Chef at Air Canada, with all his family getting involved especially his son Don being activities director the membership climbed to 101, and the following year to 199. The activities were very successful and the ambiance was overwhelming attracting people with a wonderful friend spirit witch explains the successful membership.

In 1998, because of financial problems they had no alternative but to sell their building to pay their debts. At that time, the City of Dorval with the help of the Mayor Peter B. Yeomans also a member, found the location of a building at 575 Jean-Marie-Landry near the Municipal Golf Course. This building served the social committee of employees from Transport Canada. The employees still have acquired rights to use the building for their social activities. They left the building with their furniture and the Legion of Dorval owe them a lot of recognition for their gesture. Saturday, May 30th was the official opening of the Legion operations.

We cannot thank comrades Ernest Grenier, Grant MacLaughlan and Hilton Braithwaite enough for their foresight, tenacity and hard work that led to the formation of Legion Branch 245 Dorval.

In 2012, we have approximately 200 members and prosperity and success is overwhelming once again. A special sincere thanks to the City of Dorval under the leadership of Mayor Edgar Rouleau and Councellors, their devoted personnel especially from the Public Works under the direction of Mr. Carl Minville for their continued help and recognition of our Veterans.

On June 9th the Legion will be celebrating D. Day and their 50th anniversary.

1963 Ladies Auxiliary have over the years contributed to the success of this Branch by their involvement in Branch activities, Ste-Anne-de-Bellevue Veterans Hospital, the March of Dimes, the Poppy campaign and their sponsorship of many events which benefits the financial wellbeing of Branch 245. Written by T.P. Walsh.

1969 House League Darts started due to Bill Swift. Then they entered the Inter Zone Dart League and never lost a championship.

1965 Bruce Taylor, Jim Green and Gordon Carmichael sticking out their necks by signing for the mortgage. The Branch was off and at least walking.

1971 A long hope for event became reality. In cooperation with the City of Dorval and with the help of a donor who even today must remain anonymous and who matched our collection dollar for dollar, the Dorval Cenotaph was built at the foot of Pine Beach Avenue and dedicated to the memory of the fallen, both in the Armed Forces and in service of the community in Police and Fire Services.

1973 Beginning mixed bowling league initially organized by the Ladies Auxiliary.

1974 Legion Dorval supported in Dorval minor hockey, football, Guides, Air Cadets, Bursaries to students from Dorval High and John XXIII and Annual Blood Clinics.
Each year, donated a wheel chair to the Lachine Red Cross.

1976 Dorval Legion Branch 245 hosted the 50th Anniversary of Legion 1926-1976

1972 Dorval Winter Festival "Kids Klondike Night" beginning. Participation in the festival Parade.

La Légion de Dorval, filiale 245 célèbre leur 50e anniversaire (1962-2012).

Avant 1962, un groupe d’employés de l’aéroport Dorval dont plusieurs étaient vétérans de Forces armées canadiennes ont ressenti le besoin de regrouper les vétérans. L’idée première était de créer une union d’employés ce qui n’était pas bien perçu par l’administration. Il est convenu que messieurs Ernest Chenier, Grant MacLaughlan et Hilton Braithwaite entreprennent les démarches pour leur charte.

Et l’aventure commence. Avec l’aide du Cde Gerry Mass, commandant du District ouest de la Légion Royale, du Cde Jim Doyle, président et Cde Pat Archieri de la filiale 90 de Lachine et de M. J.F. Goulet, directeur général de l’aéroport de Dorval, seize demandeurs signent le document pour l’obtention de la charte de la Légion de Dorval. C’est seize signataires sont : E. Grenier, G. MacLaughlan, H. Braithwaite, E. Fyfe, M. Chevrette, G. Merrilees, G. Turgeon, E. Woods, J.P. Vincent, J. Girard, D. MacDonald, L. Fallon, A. DeLasabonière, R. Malo, O. Jalbert et C.R. Hilliker.

Au tout début, Ernest Chenier, président; Grant MacLaughlan, trésorier; Hilton Braithwaite, secrétaire ne furent nommés à ces postes de façon intérimaire en attente d’élections.

À la suite d’une information de M. Greg Ravenda la Légion de Dorval loue la vieille maison de madame Vaillancourt située au 504 avenue Marshall. Lors de leurs réunions, ils utilisaient comme chaises et table des caisses de bières ou d’œufs. Un jour, M. Goulet, directeur général de l’aéroport, invite M. MacLaughlan à son bureau. À sa grande surprise (M. MacLaughlan s’attendant au pire...), M. Goulet lui offre pour la modique somme de 1.00 $ un surplus d’équipement. Ils se sont vite débarrassés des caisses de bières et d’œufs.

Encourager par ce don, plusieurs membres décident de rénover cette vieille maison. Du matériel arrivaient de l’aéroport, de Bertrand Lumber et de certains membres. Ils y construisent un bar, des salles de bain, ils agrandissent les placards et ils améliorent l’électricité et la plomberie.

Ils veulent identifier la vieille maison. Il faut y installer un mat pour recevoir un drapeau. L’aéroport érige le mat et la G.R.C fait don du drapeau.

Le local installé, l’on se doit de donner à ses membres l’allure de la Légion. Cde Reg Clancy utilise ses contacts dans le milieu de la mode pour l’achat de vestons bleus. Peu de temps après, bérets, cravates, épinglettes et écussons suivirent pour compléter l’uniforme des membres. C’est à compter de ce moment qu’un réel sentiment d’appartenance à la Légion prend vie. La filiale 245 ressemble à un vrai regroupement de la Légion canadienne.

Lors de la dernière guerre(’40-’45), le Ferry Command, une opération audacieuse qui consistait à amener à l’aéroport de Dorval des avions en pièces détachées pour être réassemblés et confier à des pilotes civils qui reconduisaient ces avions en Grande-Bretagne en empruntant une route aérienne peu connu. N’étant des membres des Forces de l’air, le Dominion Command leur permit de devenir membre de la Légion au même titre qu’un vétéran. M. Jim Green, membre de la R.A.F. Ferry Command, rejoignait les rangs de la Légion avec messieurs Lagrave, Don Vicar, A. Lockett (Mr Parade) qui s’occupait pendant plusieurs années des parades et des couleurs.

La Légion de Dorval, filiale 245 obtient sa charte le 7 mars 1962. Ils procèdent à des élections officielles et sont nommés au 1er conseil d’administration les membres suivants:

Cde A.E. Jim Green a écrit les premiers règlements et demeure sur ce comité pendant 20 ans. Par la suite il occupe les postes de 1er vice-président, 2e vice-président et 3e vice-président.

Éventuellement ils décidèrent d’engager un barman à temps plein. Le premier a été Marcel Lord. Avec son épouse, il demeurait au 2e étage. Il s’occupait également du nettoyage de l’établissement. Il était employé à l’aéroport (porter) et ancien lutteur.

Effet d’une bombe : madame Vaillancourt vend sa maison à Dural. Les portes ferment le 2 octobre 1965. Cependant Dural remet un don de 12 000 $ à la Légion de Dorval pour l’achat d’un terrain

Cde R. Bruce Taylor, président, Cde A.E. (Jim) Green, Cde D.D. (Des) Gordon Carmichael, Cde Hilton Braithwaite et Cde H.J. Quelle avec l’aide du maire Sarto Desnoyers, partent à la recherche d’un nouvel emplacement. Un terrain appartenant à M. Cohen est acheté sur la rue Jenkins. La Légion retient les services de l’architecte Cook pour les plans de leur prochain local. Le 5 octobre 1965 ils installent leur nouveau local au 700 rue Jenkins. L’ouverture officielle a lieu le 5 décembre.

En 1966, le nouveau président Cde Gordon Carmichael, chef de la sécurité chez Air Canada, avec l’implication de toute sa famille et tout spécialement son fils Don, responsable des activités à la Légion. L’ambiance de camaraderie et l’esprit d’équipe explique cette hausse importante des adhésions:
En 1965, il y avait 43 membres;
En 1966, il y avait 101 membres;
En 1967, la Légion de Dorval, filiale 245 comptait 199 membres.

En 1998, à cause de problèmes financiers, ils doivent vendre le bâtiment. La vente a lieu au mois de mai. Avec l’aide du maire de Dorval, M. Peter B. Yeomans, membre de la Légion, ils trouvent un bâtiment à louer situé au 575, Jean-Marie-Landry, près du Golf municipal Dorval. Ce bâtiment été utilisé par le comité social des employés de Transport Canada. Ces derniers avaient un droit acquis pour l’utilisation de ce local. Ils ont laissé le bâtiment avec tous les meubles. La Légion de Dorval leur en est très reconnaissant. Samedi le 30 mai est la date officielle d’ouverture des opérations.

En 2012 avec 200 membres, succès et prospérité sont au rendez-vous. Un remerciement sincère à la Cité de Dorval et leur personnel pour leur dévouement et leur aide précieuse en reconnaissance des vétérans.


Le 9 juin 2012, la Légion de Dorval célèbre leur 50e anniversaire en plus de la cérémonie commémorative du Jour D. «Je me souviens»

Souvenirs :

1963 Création de l’Association des dames auxiliaires.
Elles ont contribué au succès de la Légion de Dorval par leur implication lors des activités. En plus d’être activent à l’Hôpital des Vétérans de Ste-Anne-de-Bellevue, à la Marche des dix sous et la campagne des coquelicots elles participent activement au financement de la filiale 245.

1965 Bruce Taylor, Jim Green et Gordon Carmichael se sont placés en situation précaire en signant l’hypothèque nécessaire à la construction de notre édifice commercial sur Jenkins. Une fois de plus la filiale 245 été sauvée et ce grâce à 3 de ses fidèles membres.

1969 Une Ligue de dards Maison voit le jour grâce à Cde Bill Swift. Inscrit à l’Interzone Dard Ligue, ils n’ont jamais perdu de championnat. Incroyable mais vrai !

1971 Un événement tant attendu devient réalité : le Cénotaphe de Dorval.
Grâce à un donateur anonyme, et à la Cité de Dorval, la Légion est fier de son cénotaphe érigé au pied de la rue Pine Beach sur la rive du Lac Saint-Louis.
Ce monument est dédié aux combattants de nos Forces canadiennes décédés aux combats et aux pompiers et policiers de Dorval morts en service.

1973 Samedi le 26 mai à 10:30 Cérémonie d’échange de drapeaux à Rouses Point entre la Légion canadienne de Dorval, filiale 245 et le Montgomery Post 912 de l’American Legion Rouses Point.
Étaient présents: Cde Gerry MacDonald, président; Cde Al Snyder, 1er vice-président; commander George Ducharme Post 912 Rouses Point et plusieurs autres...

C’est également le début de la ligue mixte de bowling organisée par les dames auxiliaires de la Légion.

1974 la Légion de Dorval, filiale 245, encourage plusieurs groupes de Dorval comme le hockey mineur, le football, les Guides, les Cadets de l’air en plus de remettre des bourses d’étude aux étudiants des écoles Jean XXIII et Dorval High. N’oublions pas les cliniques de sang et le don annuellement d’une chaise roulante à la Croix Rouge de Lachine.

1976 Légion Dorval, filiale 245 devient l’hôte pour le 50e anniversaire de la fondation des Légions de 1926-1976.

1979 Festival d’hiver de Dorval. C’est le début de la soirée Klondike pour les jeunes de Dorval. C’est également le début de notre participation dans divers parades.
Mention spécial : Mme Gladys Baumgart est toujours responsable pour la Soirée Klondike lors du festival.

1980 La Légion de Dorval était l’un des 5 commanditaires de l’Association du Lakeshore Legion House nommé Manoir Carignan situé à Hudson.
