Three years ago Ross Mountain Farm was a dream and a 3.5 acre blank canvas. To grow organic blueberries was an easy decision — they’re super nutritious and simply delicious! They’re also suitable for the growing conditions here. The idle (but easy to maintain) upper grass field was an obvious place to start.

To be a certified organic operation was, for us, automatic. From the beginning we’ve worked with IOPA, the Islands Organic Producers Association. All organic producers must adhere to the Canadian Organic Standards as well as comply with the more restrictive rules IOPA has adopted. We feel organic certification is the best way to demonstrate our dedication to providing the finest produce possible. Last year Ross Mountain Farm was granted 'Transitional to Certified Organic' status.

Our farm is a work in progress. Now that the blueberries are established and bearing fruit, we can shift some of our attention to other areas of the property. Gradually we’re replacing non-native or unproductive areas with native trees, shrubs and food producing plants.

We’ll soon be trying our hand at various veggies, legumes and grains. We want to contribute to the supply of good wholesome locally grown food for Campbell River.

We’ve talked with many organic farmers here on Vancouver Island, and we get more inspired with each conversation. We share a commitment to a healthy soil ecosystem, and continually work to improve it in a sustainable way. As our growing experience broadens and our soil comes into balance, we are dedicated to reducing off-farm inputs over time.
