The Kelso Beach site was chosen as our oral and written history tells us that the banks of the Sydenham and Potawatomie were once the fertile hunting and fishing grounds of the Saugeen Ojibwa Nation of the Nawash people.
Its time to acknowledge their presence in the past, present and future. Unity and balance symbolizes the interconnection of all life, the various laws of nature, and how life represents a circular journey. The number four is sacred and represents many things: the four seasons, the four parts of a person, physical, mental, emotional and spiritual; the four kingdoms animal, mineral, plant and human, the four sacred medicines tobacco, cedar, sage and sweet-grass.
All four elements and principles of life which everything consists; Fire, Water, Air and Earth plus the fifth Spirit will be used. The four directional stones are to be used as benches 20 inches high and 2’ by 4’ wide.
Seven Grandfather Stones that represent the Seven Sacred Teachings, Wisdom, Love, Respect, Bravery, Honesty, Humility, and Truth are also included.
Cut stone carved in the shape of Fire will symbolize Creator and Spirit in the center of the Seven Grandfather Stones.
Cedar and Birch clumps were chosen because they are sacred woods to Aboriginal people and will help to conceal the pole lighting that will be used to light the area at night.
The paths around and between the elements will be grass which will be easy to maintain and give everyone a chance to be closer to Mother Earth. All My Relations

We hope to get started soon and be finished by the 150th Anniversary of Canada and Owen Sound’s 160th Anniversary in 2017.
