In 2013, a small but dedicated group of HEMA practitioners came together in Victoria Park. Since then, HEMA on PEI has grown to involve dozens keenly interested students of the Historical European Martial Arts.

In recent years, the practice of Historical European Martial Arts, or HEMA, has grown around the world. We at the Maritime Sword School are excited to be in a position to open a school in here in Charlottetown.

Using historically accurate, well-documented codexes and manuals, we teach our students a number of weaponized fighting systems that were studied and used by Europeans around the world for hundreds of years.

Akin to Eastern martial arts (Aikido, Jujitsu, Kenjutsu, etc.), HEMA is the study of complex and historically relevant combat and martial styles. Additionally, people who have practiced modern sport fencing will also find similarities in the HEMA fighting styles - as they are the ancestors of modern-day fencing techniques.

Hema is also unique in many ways, as the fundamental teachings include the use of longsword, dagger, sabre, and spear.
