Mader's Store 3.11

We are a third generation family store, established in 1908 by Howard Mader who operated the general store until his death in1942. His wife Etta ran the store from 1942 to 1945 until her son John returned from fighting overseas during WWII. John ran the business in the existing building until 1968 when he moved into a new modern building on the same property. The business was sold to his son Peter in 1984 and is still operated by him to date. The store has always been a general type store with the needs of small rural farms, cottages and everyday supplies being our main focus. Today the business is under pressure from a declining rural population, the abandoning of traditional farming, troubles in both Cristmas tree farming and forestry, the Walmart syndrome, illegal cigarette sales, the condition of rural roads and our isolated stand alone location. We are maintaining our selection of hardware, grocery, meats, produce and general merchandise even in these tough times. At this point we we are looking for something new, entering into the prepared meal categories or a side business that will fit into our existing store. The privatizing of liquor sales so that small stores could sell beer and wine would greatly improve customer traffic and associated sales in general...... we look forward to the day.
