Mount Pearl Senior High School has a proud tradition of providing a superior educational
experience for its students. Our reputation is exemplified through our outstanding
performance in academics, sports and co-curricular activities. This performance is a
direct result of the dedication and commitment of its students and teachers and the
continued support of parents and community.
The MPSH Underwater Robotics club is one such team that has achieved tremendous
success at the Provincial Underwater Robotics Competitions at the Marine Institute in St.
John’s. This past weekend we placed 1st overall among 14 teams in the province. With
this achievement, we have earned the right to represent our school, our city and our
province at the 15th annual MATE International ROV competition at the NASA Johnson
Space Center's Neutral Buoyancy Lab (NBL) in Houston, TX, June 23-25. This is an
exciting opportunity for our 20 member team.
In December 2015, NASA and Oceaneering Space Systems (OSS) issued a request for
proposals for a first-of-its kind, dual purpose and single launch remotely operated vehicle
that can operate in the harsh environments of both the deep ocean and outer space. The

Mount Pearl Senior High Robotics club has designed a new ROV to meet these
specifications. Our ROV can survive transport to Jupiter’s moon Europa and operate in
the ocean under its ice sheet to collect data and deploy instrumentation; find and recover
critical equipment that sank in the Gulf of Mexico after a recent series of testing
programs; collect samples and analyze data from oil mats located in the northern Gulf of
Mexico to determine their origin; photograph and collect samples of deep-water corals to
assess their health post-Deepwater Horizon oil spill; and prepare a wellhead for
decommission and conversion into an artificial reef.
In addition to these product
demonstrations, our team must prepare a 25 page technical report, technical sales
presentation, and a marketing display.

The MPSH ROV team has spent over 300 hours on this project and we are ready to
compete against the world and represent our school, our city and our province.
