Feet First Orthopedics owner and Canadian Certified Pedorthist, Frank MacCalder is available by appointment for biomechanical foot assesments in Sydney River. We do provide home or work site visits for your convenience, depending on your location. Appointments are availble on evenings and weekends. Also serving the Inverness and Victoria counties on weekend via MacKeign's pharmacy in Whycocomagh. Please call or e-mil for any inquires.

Canadian Certified Pedorthist are the experts in foot biomechanics and foot orthotics and footwear therapy. Frank's 10 plus years in the field in both private and public sector have allowed him to develop his knowledge and skills in pedorthics. We also do all our own technical work, so if you need foot orthotics or a shoe modification, the Pedorthist whom you say at the clinic will also be fabricating you product specifically for you.

Canadian Certified Pedorthist are heath care professional who are trained and certified in the assessment, the design, manufacture, fit and modification of foot orthotics and footwear with the goal of alleviating painful or debilitating conditions of the foot and lower limb that if left untreated could result in limited mobility. Pedorthist are one of the few healthcare professionals trained in the assessment of lower limb anatomy and biomechanics.

Pedorthic Services

Pedorthic Assessment: A biomechanical assessments of the foot and ankle include a detailed symptoms and history report, bony alignment, range of motion, standing posture, function of the foot and the interaction of the foot with the rest of the body. The assessment also includes gait analysis, and footwear consultation.

Gait Analysis: The observation of the lower extremity when walking. Used to determine mechnically inefficient movement pattern and symmetry.

Custom Foot Orthotics: Custom made-for-you foot appliance placed within footwear and are used to accommodate for boney deformities, and/or modify the movement pattern of the foot and lower limb. True custom foot orthotics are made from three dimensional casting of the foot.

Footwear Modification: The modification of footwear to accommodate deformity and or improve function of the foot and lower limb. For example, shoe lifts, rocker soles and resoling.

Custom Footwear: Footwear that is manufactured specifically for you to accommodate your footwear needs. Typically only used in rare cases that require custom footwear to fit difficult to fit feet and deformity.

Custom-made Sandals: We also design and make our own custom sandals to provide improved support and fit for those hot days or for wear around home.
