What is Colourstrings?

Colourstrings is an internationally reputable Kodaly based approach to music & instrumental teaching from Finland. It is the only approach that will take a chid from the earliest stages of music kindergarten through instrumental lessons at conservatory level.

Music & Movement Classes 3mths - 6 yrs grouped by age.

Core music skills are developed through a host of increasingly specific activities in a playful, imaginative yet structured enviroment. Classes focus on the young child’s developmental and emotional needs and aim to provide a set of experiences, which will help to develop within each child, a personal response to music.

With the help of the simple graded song books & CDs, children learn to sing in tune (a skill which we believe everyone is capable of learning!) develop a strong sense of beat, an understanding of the basic music concepts (pitch, rhythm etc.) and highly developed listening skills. Eventually the children learn to read and write basic music notation prior to learning an instrument through Colourstrings (if they later wish to).

Favourite songs from the music kindergarten classes reappear in the instrumental books creating an integrated system of learning that has already produced many generations of professional musicians and active hobbyists world-wide.

All the early work takes place on an unconscious level (3mth-2 yrs). For example, a lot of work with children under three emphasizes the pulse of the music. We pat or play an instrument, march around as we sing the song while the pulse is experienced unconsciously. In the 3 year class musical concepts are explained in a semi-conscious way through games. For example children will say the rhyme, clap the rhythm of the words and then play the rhythm on a drum.

Eventually in the 4 & 5 year classes, learning is made conscious through games and musical stories and the children will be able to write down the rhythm that they have just played (which they work out aurally and don't just copy from the board!). All musical ideas and concepts are introduced in this progressive way through games. The child experiences the concept long before articulating what the concept means. There are no exceptions and no failures, thanks to the quality and depth of the unconscious learning that the children have had in our younger classes.
