Directors are elected from the six major regions of Canada to oversee the functioning of the society.

Officially sanctioned shows, judges' licensing program, type classification, official milk testing, and genetic evaluations are some of the programs conducted by CGS.

The Canadian Goat Society maintains the Herd books for nine purebred breeds of goats and a Special Registry for upgraded animals as specified under the animal pedigree act, which are: Alpine, Angora, LaMancha, Nigerian Dwarf, Nubian, Oberhasli, Pygmy, Saanen and Toggenburg.

CGS conducts programs and services to educate breeders, to evaluate animals and their performance, which are as follows: Classification, Judges Licensing, Milk Recording Programs, Sanctioned Shows, Semen Collection, a Master Breeder Award and a Quarterly Magazine.

CGS uses the services of Canadian Livestock Records Corporation (CLRC) for registration papers. You may use their online service or via mail with all the appropriate paperwork.
