We take leading 3D printing technology and make it easy and affordable for everyone to use, making designing your own product and toys more accessible and personal!
3D printing is an additive technology in which objects are built by layering very thin layers. The 3D printers that we use at Bauwerk use a method based on material extrusion. In this system a semi-liquid material -- and most usually a hot thermoplastic -- is deposited from a computer-controlled print head.
This process was invented by Scott Crump in 1988 along who set up the company called Stratasys to commercialize the invention. He named this technology 'fused deposition modelling' or 'FDM', and patented and trademarked these terms. Because of these patents other manufacturers using the same process have used other names to refer to it such as as 'thermoplastic extrusion', 'plastic jet printing' (PJP), the 'fused filament method' (FFM) or 'fused filament fabrication' (FFF).
Objects made through FDM can be made of out of exactly the same thermoplastics used in traditional injection moulding. Most FMD 3D printers can print with both ABS (acrylonitrile butadiene styrene), as well as a biodegradable bioplastic called PLA (polylactic acid) that is produced from organic alternatives to oil. At Bauwerk’s we use mainly PLA.
