At the time our Squadron was conceived, it was the task of the first Commanding Officer, LCol (Ret'd) D.E. Irish and the members of the Parent's Sponsoring Committee to select a designation for the new Squadron. Thus the founders opted to research Hamilton's past to select an identity that would bear historical significance.

The name component of the designation was derived from an Air Force unit that was based at Mount Hope during WWII. 19 Squadron became 119 City of Hamilton Tiger Squadron and is still in service as 424 Search and Rescue Squadron at CFB Trenton. It was named after the city's football team, the Hamilton Tigers. When their commanding officer gave his permission to use the name, half the battle toward Squadron identity was won. However, a number was still required to complete our designation.

The number component originated from one of the original Air Training units based out of Hamilton schools during the war. These units included, 62 Westdale, 81 at Central Technical, 150 at Cathedral Boys, 195 at Central Collegiate and 330 Delta High School. The Sponsors elected to use 150 which, when combined with their name research, resulted in the "150 Hamilton Tiger" designation. This was submitted to the Air Cadet League of Canada and was approved shortly thereafter, officially giving birth to 150 Hamilton Tiger Squadron on the 18th of February 1970.
