Natal Historic Center Church

The Church of Our Lady of the Presentation, located in the hill from where Jeronimo de Albuquerque implemented the city. Stands out in the urban landscape of the current square André de Albuquerque, former Grand Street, the beginnings of Natal in the middle of the City Cultural Centre.

The temples and monuments listed by the State Government and belongs to the Archdiocese of Natal. However, it became much more than a house of worship, became a monument to the Rio Grande do Norte is proud to own and display, and it constituted one of the few churches built in Brazil in the early seventeenth century.

The chapel that gave rise to the present church was built in 1599. There was celebrated the Mass of the foundation of Natal Town.

The first provided vicar in the parish of Our Lady of the Presentation, was Father Gaspar Gonçalves da Rocha, as contained in the Compendium of Ambrose Smith of Revenue and Expenditure of the State of Brazil, 1605 document.

Some time after construction of the original chapel is projected to a new church, with higher dimensions. In 1619 the temple was inaugurated expanded.

In the period 1633 to 1654, the Dutch dominated the Flagship of the Rio Grande. At the time Natal had only 40 houses. The Church of Our Lady of the Presentation became a Calvinist church, from preaching preacher held by Johanna on December 18, 1633.

Flemish expelled the invaders, the Flagship in 1654, they destroyed everything they could, including books, records pertaining to the church.

Father Leonardo Tavares de Melo was the first vicar of the Matrix home after the Portuguese reconquest. He came to the Flagship of the Rio Grande in 1656, reportedly in the registry Date of Grant of the Senate and the House Sesmaria Natal, dated January 2, 1660.

The new vicar just handled the recovery of the church, but the works were only completed in 1694.

The patron saint of Natal is Our Lady of the Presentation, your image goes back to the seventeenth century and reached the city floating inside a wooden box, on November 21, 1753. Which is why the image is, in fact, Our Lady of the Rosary, is now venerated as the "Presentation".

A Igreja Matriz de Nossa Senhora da Apresentação, localizada no outeiro do sítio onde Jerônimo de Albuquerque Maranhão implantou a cidade. Destaca-se na paisagem urbana da atual praça André de Albuquerque, antiga Rua Grande, dos primórdios de Natal, em pleno Centro Cultural da Cidade.

O templo é monumento tombado pelo Governo do Estado e pertence a Arquidiocese de Natal. Contudo, tornou-se muito mais que uma casa de orações, transformou-se em um monumento que o Rio Grande do Norte orgulha-se de possuir e exibir, constituindo-se numa das poucas igrejas do Brasil erguida no início do século XVII.

A capela que deu origem a atual igreja foi construída em 1599. Ali foi celebrada a missa de fundação da Cidade do Natal.

O primeiro vigário provido na freguesia de Nossa Senhora da Apresentação, foi o padre Gaspar Gonçalves da Rocha, conforme consta na Relação de Ambrósio Siqueira da Receita e Despesa do Estado do Brasil, documento de 1605.

Algum tempo após a construção da primitiva capela projeta-se uma nova igreja, com dimensões superiores. Em 1619 o templo ampliado foi inaugurado.

No período de 1633 a 1654, os holandeses dominaram a Capitânia do Rio Grande. Naquela época Natal possuía apenas 40 casas. A Igreja Matriz de Nossa Senhora da Apresentação transformou-se em um templo calvinista, a partir da prédica realizada pelo pregador Johanna, em 18 de dezembro de 1633.

Expulsos os invasores flamengos, da Capitânia, em 1654, destruíram tudo que puderam, inclusive os livros de registros referentes à igreja.

Padre Leonardo Tavares de Melo foi o primeiro vigário da Matriz de natal, após a reconquista portuguesa. Ele chegou à Capitânia do Rio Grande em 1656, segundo consta no Registro de Concessão de Data e Sesmaria do Senado da Câmara do Natal, datado de 02 de janeiro de 1660.

O novo vigário logo cuidou da recuperação da igreja, porém as obras somente foram concluídas em 1694.

Ao longo dos séculos, a igreja sofreu inúmeros benefícios e acréscimos. A construção da torre, em 1862, concluía definitivamente, o projeto original da igreja.

A padroeira de Natal é Nossa Senhora da Apresentação, sua imagem remonta ao século XVII e chegou à Cidade boiando dentro de um caixote de madeira, em 21 de novembro de 1753. Motivo pelo qual a imagem que é, na verdade, Nossa Senhora do Rosário, passou a ser venerada como da “Apresentação”.

Dezenas de sacerdotes já passaram pela Matriz. O primeiro deles foi o padre Gaspar Gonçalves da Rocha, cujo sucessor nos dias atuais é o Pe. Flávio Herculano do Nascimento e monsenhor Agnelo Dantas Barreto, muito dedicados às obras de conservação da igreja Matriz
