Umm Salal is a municipality in the State of Qatar.It contains several historic places, such as Barzan Tower. The municipal headquarters Umm Salal is located inland, about 10 km from the coast and 15 km north of Doha, the Qatari capital.Umm Salal's eastern edge is the shores of the Persian Gulf. Hence, the area's name translates literally to "mother of rocks". It was so named for the numerous rock formations found in the area.HistoryThe municipality was established in 1972, at the same time as Qatar's other initial municipalities. Its headquarters was inaugurated on 29 November 1974, under the auspices of Sheikh Mohammad bin Jaber Al-Thani, former minister of Municipality and Urban Planning, alongside Abdul Aziz al-Ghanem, who was Umm Salal's municipal council representative. The first head of the municipal council was Abdullah bin Ahmed Al Thani.InfrastructureAs of 2015, there are 17 schools, 98 mosques, 2 health care facilities, and 2 community centers or malls operating within the municipality.A large-scale government-owned plant nursery is located in the village of Abu Thaylah. Plants grown in the nursery are used for research and also distributed to government ministries. The nursery spans 2,500 sq meters and was established in 2003.
