The former Collegium Pro America Latina (abbreviated to COPAL) was built in the early 20th century and acquired by KU Leuven in 2002. The building underwent extensive renovation in several stages to transform it into a student residence that combines historic charm with modern comfort. In 2004, 36 student rooms were created on the third floor, and in 2007 another 45 rooms were added on the first and second floor. In Autumn 2008, the final stage started: over a two-year period, an additional 75 rooms were added on the ground floor, the first and second floor. The former convent now has 156 modern, bright and spacious rooms (including 25 double rooms) and 14 kitchens.

60 rooms are reserved for students participating in the Dondeynehuis project, established at KU Leuven on the initiative of former rector Roger Dillemans. The remaining rooms are available to all students, without specific restrictions. 12 rooms are reserved for students participating in the project Universitaire Parochie (Juntos).

The student residence blends the authentic atmosphere of the former convent with modern style: it features bright colours, new materials, surprising vistas, small courtyards and an attractive multifunctional room with atrium. The monumental central corridor with its pointed arches and black-and-white marble floor connects the different parts of the building and leads into the residence’s spacious garden.
