En tant que point de départ pour l'exploration de la nature comme forme de production et reproduction
culturelles, Parckdesign 2016 lance l'idée du Jardin Essentiel : un jardin récemment planté et parsemé de 30 variétés de plantes médicinales et aromatiques bordant une allée de parc franco­anglais du 19e siècle basée sur la symétrie et le principe néoclassique de mettre de l'ordre dans la nature. En relation directe au jardin récemment aménagé, un appareil de distillation prendra forme, soit un laboratoire invitant les usagers du parc à en apprendre davantage sur les différentes formes d'extraction, de composition et de solvants, à les tester et à graduellement transformer les plantes du jardin en un assortiment de produits. En parallèle, un processus de distillation culturelle créera une nouvelle forme de société et de nature, s'instillant dans un programme mixte de design et d'interventions artistiques sur le site.

De juin à septembre, ces concepts s'épanouiront dans un programme en continu d'interventions visant à refléter le contexte dans lequel Le Jardin Essentiel prend forme. Ce programme inclura le jardin de plantes aromatiques et les interventions de design de l'appareil de distillation, un programme d'ateliers et des séances de laboratoire au labo de distillation, de design sur site et d'impression, et d'activités de design et de construction, visites du parc et jeux. Le programme d'activation sera mis en œuvre en collaboration avec une série d'institutions sociales et culturelles locales encourageant l'implication de résidents et voisins. De plus, plusieurs artistes locaux et internationaux seront invités à développer un
programme de performances et d'interventions artistiques, une école du soir et des événements discursifs.

Le parc Duden, un parc monumental, chargé d'histoire dans la commune bruxelloise de Forest,
constituera le site principal du festival, grâce à sa vue spectaculaire sur le centre­ville et le dôme du Palais du Justice. En plus du site principal du festival, le parc Duden, d'autres parcs de Bruxelles
constitueront des satellites du Jardin Essentiel. Ces satellites constitueront les théâtres de différentes activités du festival orchestrées en collaboration avec des associations locales.

Als uitgangspunt voor een beschouwing van de natuur als vorm van culturele productie en reproductie lanceert Parckdesign 2016 Le Jardin Essentiel: een nieuw aangeplante tuin met meer dan 30 geneeskrachtige en aromatische plantensoorten langsheen een Frans­Engelse 19de­eeuwse parklaan, symmetrisch ingericht volgens het neoclassicistische stijlidioom waarbij orde wordt opgelegd aan de natuur. Naast de nieuw aangelegde tuin wordt ook een distilleerapparaat gebouwd dat dienst zal doen als labo voor de bezoekers van het park die willen experimenteren met verschillende vormen van extractie, samenstelling en oplosmiddelen, waarbij de planten uit de tuin geleidelijk worden getransformeerd in allerhande producten. Tegelijk wordt de relatie tussen maatschappij en natuur dankzij een cultureel distillatieproces opnieuw uitgepuurd, wat ook doorsijpelt naar het gevarieerde aanbod van design en artistieke ingrepen in het park.

Van juni tot september komen al die ideeën geleidelijk tot ontplooiing met een programma van
interventies die de context nabootsen waarin Le Jardin Essentiel gaandeweg vorm krijgt. Dit boeiende programma omvat onder meer de kruidentuin en de activiteiten rond het distilleerapparaat, een activatieprogramma met workshops en practicums in het distillatielabo, design&print en design&bouw
activiteiten, rondleidingen en ludieke activiteiten. Dit activatieprogramma wordt uitgevoerd in
samenwerking met tal van lokale actoren uit het middenveld en culturele instellingen die de betrokkenheid en participatie van omwonenden en buren aanmoedigen. Daarnaast wordt een select
gezelschap van plaatselijke en internationale artiesten uitgenodigd om performances en artistieke interventies, een avondschool en praatprogramma's te organiseren.

Het Dudenpark in de Brusselse gemeente Vorst, een monumentaal park met een bijzondere
erfgoedwaarde, doet dienst als hoofdpodium van het festival, met een spectaculair zicht op het stadscentrum en de koepel van het Justitiepaleis. Naast dit hoofdpodium in Dudenpark zullen her en der in Brussel ook nevenpodia van Le Jardin Essentiel te vinden zijn. In die andere parken worden eveneens verschillende festivalactiviteiten georganiseerd in samenwerking met lokale verenigingen.

As a starting point for the exploration of nature as a form of cultural production and reproduction, Parckdesign 2016 introduces the idea of Le Jardin Essentiel: a newly planted garden with over 30 varieties of medicinal and aromatic plants along a French­English 19th­century park passageway based on symmetry and the neoclassical principle of imposing order on nature. In direct relation to the newly implemented garden, a distillation apparatus will take shape, a laboratory that invites users of the park to learn about and test different forms of extraction, composition and solvents, and to gradually transform the plants from the garden into a variety of products. At the same time, a cultural distillation process will boil down the new relationship of society and nature, and will permeate a mixed programme of design and artistic interventions on the site.

From June to September, these concepts will unfold in an ongoing programme of interventions that seek to echo the context in which Le Jardin Essentiel is taking shape. This programme will include the herbal garden and the design interventions of the distillation apparatus, an activation programme of workshops and laboratory sessions in the distillation lab, on­site design and print, and design and build activities, park tours and games. This activation programme will be carried out in collaboration with an array of local social and cultural institutions promoting the involvement of residents and neighbours.

Additionally, several selected local and international artists will be invited to develop a programme of performances and artistic interventions, a night school and discursive events.

Duden park, a monumental park with a significant history in the Brussels municipality of Forest, will act as the main site of the festival, with its spectacular vista of the city centre and the dome of the Palais du Justice. In addition to the main hub of the festival in Duden park, other parks in Brussels will act as satellites of Le Jardin Essentiel. These satellites will host different festival activities in collaboration with local associations.
