Sunamganj Government College is situated in an idyllic place of south-east corner of Sunamganj town. With the concerted efforts of the dwellers of this locality this college was established in 19944. Initially it started its journey in a private auditorium named Town hall. Babu Profulla Kumar Chatterjee took over the charge as a first principal of the institution on July 01, 1944. Sir Syed Muhammad Sadullah, Chief Minister of then Asam, visited Sunamganj to inaugurate the newly-founded institution.

Town hall was extended to the north to provide more space for the college. The floor of this extended part being made of wood was built on pillars. At present the place is occupied with commercial organizations, markets and banks. The present site was donated to the college by Late dewan Anwar Reza Chowdhury, a Zaminder of Laxmansri. Mr. Samsul Haque Chisti, Deputy Commissioner of Sylhet, inaugurated it.

From 1940 to 1944 Syed Mortuza Ali, a brother of prominent literary figure Syed Muztoba Ali, had been serving here as an SDO. Syed Mortuza Ali. In his autobiography “Amader Kaler Katha” commented about the establishment of the college, “ I went to rural areas to collecting subscription for the college. Late Abdul Bari Chowdhury, Advocate mofis Chowdhury, Abdul Khaleque Ahmed, Abdul Hannan Chowdhury, Late Mokbul Hossain Chowdhury and other leaders extended their helping hands. At first, collecting an amount of 25000/- we applied to the Calcutta University. On behalf of the university Prof. Zuber Siddique and Sotish Chandra ghosh paid a visit to the college. They told that unless at least fifty thousand taka was deposited in the college fund, its performance could not be ensured. I again moved to collect subscription and was able to amass an amount of 50 thousand taka. Biredra Kishor Roy Chowdhury consented to donate five thousand taka when contacted over telegram.”

In 1947 the college started functioning with new enthusian and vigor with the emergence of Pakistan. At this time the university of Dhaka was endowed with the power to control intermediate education. In 1960, academic activities of the college started in the present site. The middle part of the present tin shed building designed in the shape of E block was constructed first. In the month of August, 1961 college was shifted to this building. The work was supervised by erstwhile SDO of Sunamganj Mr. B. R. Nazim, a son of renowed Nizam dynasty of Chittagong and reputed Principal Captain Karimuddin Ahmed. On September, 1961 SDO of Sunamganj by the foundation stone of the science building. It was ceremoniously inaugurated by the Deputy commissioner of Sylhet Mr. M Alauddin in 1962.

National Professor, reputed Philosopher Dewan Muhannad Azraf served in this college for a couple of years (1948-1952). He taught logic, English and Bangla. He served here as both a Vice-Principal and Principal.

In 1965 Mr. Abdul Mannan Chowdhury of Derai Upozila, Village: Borail took over the charge of the Principal of the institution, Abdul Mannan Chowdhury a man of towering personality, worked diligently to develop the college.

Sunamganj (Bengali: সুনামগঞ্জ Sunamgonj) is a district located in north-eastern Bangladesh within the Sylhet Division.
