Mr. Mirza Azam, MP a renowned personality of Jamalpur District has been elected Member of Parliament five times from Melandah-Madarganj constituency. Presently, he is the State Minister of Textiles and Jute Ministry of the Bangladesh Parliament. Mr. Azam is renowned for his dedication for development of various socioeconomic activities especially in the sector of education.

He is the founder of many educational institutions in his constituency and thereby paved the path for enlightening people from illiteracy and ignorance. He has been committed to promote the technical education for widening the national economy of Bangladesh and this willingness has been manifested through his decision to establish a science and technology based higher educational institute at Melandah area in 1996. With this end in view, a committee was formed under the leadership of Mr. Azam to materialize the proposal for establishing a Fisheries College in the area and the committee of local elites managed to receive a good portion of land as gift from the benevolent person and purchased the rest.

The College was named "Sheikh Fajilatunnesa Mujib Fisheries College" in memory of the great lady of Sheikh Fajilatunnesa (wife of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman). On 20th April, 1998 Mr. Azam laid down the foundation stone of the College. Later on with active and sincere contribution of Professor Dr. Anwarul Islam, former vice-chancellor of Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh, the College started its journey opening honors course on Fisheries with 60 students from the session 2000-2001. It got its affiliation to Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh on 20th May, 2000. Since then the College is running smoothly under the proper guidance of governing body and active participation of teachers, officers, other employers and local people.
