Shahid Sergeant Zahurul Haq Hall 4.83

Shahid Sergeant Zahrul Haq Hall is one of the biggest and traditional halls among 21 halls/hostels of the University of Dhaka. It was founded in 1957 and named after the Pakistani national poet Muhammad Iqbal. But Since Bangladesh's Independence in 1971, the name was changed to Zahurul Haq Hall after the name of Zahurul Haq, martyr of 'Agartala Conspiracy Case'. On 7 th July, 2013 the name has again been changed to Shahid Sergeant Zahrul Haq Hal.

Anyone coming for the first time, will be amazed by the stunning natural beauty of this hall. The hall has a big pond surrounding by a beautiful flower garden. The garden also includes mango trees, blackberry trees, coconut trees, jackfruit trees, bamboo bushes, krishnochura, bokul, kodom etc etc. All these fruit trees are for the students!There is also a big playground. Actually you can never imagine such a place having rural shadow like this in this Dhaka city.

The hall is divided into three parts; main building, extension building and tin shed. The main building is a three storied and extension is a four storied building.
At present there are nearly 725 resident, 600 doubler and 1,055 nonresident ;totally 2,380 students residing in this hall (Dhaka University Academic Calender:July2 011-June,2012).

This hall is surrounded by Nilkhet, Eden College, Polashi Square, SM Hall and Dhaka University Club.

This hall played an important role in 1971 and still now playing. At that time this hall was the center from where the activities of “স্বাধীন বাংলাদেশ ছাত্র সংগ্রাম পরিষদের” were run. Even the first flag of Bangladesh was made in the room no 116 of this hall by Shib Narayan Dash in 6 June 1970. As a result this hall was the main target of the Pakistani militarily and on 25 Marchs' black night nearly 200 students (ঢাকা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের অধ্যাপক কে এ মুনিম এর ঢাকা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের ১৯৭১-৭২ সালের বার্ষিক প্রতিবেদন অনুযায়ী) were massacred in this hall .
