Studies & Training

Since 1976 PIB has been offering basic journalism training courses for newspaper, radio and television journalists, information officers, public relations personnel and extension workers. During the last 34 years PIB imparted training to 16730 participants arranging a total of 670 training courses.

Along with foundation courses PIB offers specialized training courses on sports reporting, economic reporting, energy reporting, reporting on women and children issues, gender issues etc. It organizes advocacy meetings and seminars on development journalism, climate change and environmental awareness, population and public health and digital Bangladesh sometimes as a part of the government campaign. PIB also arranges short courses on public relations, printing technology, photography and newspaper management.

PIB over the years has developed an intimate relationship with the journalist communities of the country which eases access to them and arrangement of training courses, workshops etc.

PIB has been conducting a one year diploma course from 2000-2001 academic year. So far 11 batches has completed PGD course from PIB.

Along with training courses PIB has developed necessary training materials being used both by the trainers of PIB and other similar organizations.

University teachers, economists, legal experts, planning experts, professional journalists and foreign journalists are invited to conduct training sessions along with PIB trainers.

PIB is associated with Commonwealth Press Union (CPU), Commonwealth Journalists Association (CJA), Thomson Foundation, International Institute for Journalism ( IIJ), Asian Media Information and Communication Center (AMIC), Press Foundation of Asia (PFA), and other international and regional mass media training and research institutes.


Development Projects:

Unicef and GoB funded Project:

PIB has been conducting training and feature programmes under the project Advocacy and Communication for the Children and Women with the financial help of UNICEF and GoB since 1996. Third phase of this project is going on is full swing. PIB organizes training workshops for journalists on childlabour, corporal punishment, children and women development issues, arrange dialogue and publishes feature.


A2I Funded Project:

PIB implemented training Workshop on Digital Bangladesh at Divisional Headquarter with financial (partial) and technical help from the Access to Information Project (A2I) of Prime Ministers’ Office.

Rockfeller Foundation Funded Project:

PIB has been organizing training courses, doing research and other different types of activities under the project of ‘’Making a march towards universal health coverage in Bangladesh; training up journalists and capacitating PIB since 2011.By this time PIB organized a seminar. A research work on ‘health reporting and universal health coverage in Bangladesh” is in the final stage. An exposure trip was held in Thailand with 8 members’ team, among them 4 were PIB officials and rest was journalists and academician.


Research & Reference

Digital Preservation of Newspaper:

This Wing regularly preserves four newspapers in digitized form. Copies of newspapers are scanned and stored in CDs so that users can use it through computer and take necessary information through print out. The digitized preservation consumes little space and data can be preserved in a very systematic way.


Clippings:

The library and newspapers archives preserves about 265 subject wise newspaper clippings on national and international events and issues.


Chronology:

A Chronology of important national and international events and issues related to media and allied areas published in the national dailies in Bangladesh are also preserved in the library and its newspapers archives.
