To supplement the activities of the Government on cardiovascular diseases management and prevention, this foundation was formed at the initiative of National Professor Brig. (Rtd.) Abdul Malik with some dedicated medical and non-medical social workers on 12 October 1978. Honorable Prime Minister, Government of the People's Republic of Bangladesh is the Chief Patron of this Foundation. The Foundation is a member of World Heart Federation, World Hypertension League and World Health Organization is also supporting the various training programs and academic activities.

National Heart Foundation Hospital and Research Institute is one of the project of this foundation. Currently this hospital is functioning as 330 bedded modern cardiac hospital and carrying out all types of modern non-invasive & invasive cardiac investigations & treatments, pacemaker & other device implantation, both closed & open heart surgeries. 30% poor patients are getting free services in this hospital and all investigations and treatments are done at lower charges than other hospitals. This Institute is conducting postgraduate courses for doctors & different diploma courses for cardiac nurses & technicians. Clinical and epidemiological research works are being carried out.

To spread it’s activities of creating awareness on heart diseases & to offer better treatment facilities for cardiac diseases, NHFB has 36 affiliated bodies throughout the country.
