Mymensingh Laboratory high school is a bezzword in Mymensingh and adjoining districts. It is located at a posh area of Mymensingh town. It is quite adjacent to Deputy Commissioner’s office and court building. Just in front of it stands the teacher’s training (women) and at the back there is teacher’s Training college (men). In the vicinity of it there are a host of secondary and primary schools.

Then the district administration was in a quandary about the best use of the abandoned building. They were receiving different proposals from different corners. But no one was satisfactory. At that critical moment some enterprising, energetic and spirited freedom fighters came forward confidently with the proposal of setting up a secondary school in that building. The proposal was accepted spontaneously by the district administration on the ground that it was originally built for a school house and leased out the building with 1.58 acre of land to start the school. The name Mymensingh Laboratory High School was finalized in consultation with the district administration and local elite. Then came the question of Headmaster who will be at the steering wheel of the school. The problem was easily solved. Among the freedom fighters Mr. M.A. Kashem was qualified enough to be the Headmaster. So, he was unanimously appointed the Headmaster of the new school. Thus everything was done for launching a new school. Finally Mr. M.A. Mannan, Deputy commissioner of Mymensingh, unveiled the plaque of the school on 17 July, 1987.

But what was the objective behind setting up a school? The goal was to impregnate the young kids with the spirit of the liberation war. It is education through which propagation of the lofty ideals of the liberation war can be ensured. So, freedom fighters felt the necessity of setting up an educational institution.

Most importantly, the amelioration of the downtrodden class of the society did not miss the attention of the organizers. The children of the well to do family receive education in the institutions with ample facilities. But expenses for those schools are beyond the reach of the poor. So, ultra-poor, under privileged and backward children are given priority for admission in to this school. Most of these children are taught free of cost.

So, the competent Headmaster Mr. M.A.Kashem started this stupendous task of achieving the goal with firm conviction and commitment. He invited some of his old students with graduation and post graduation degree to work in this school as teachers. Initially the teachers rendered their services with scanty remuneration as the new school had no fund. The Headmaster and the young teachers moved from door to door in different locality of the town to gather students. Gradually the number of students, both boys and girls, increased remarkably. The curricular activities started in full swing. Being satisfied with the mods operand and achievement the ministry of Education awarded academic recognition to the school in 1988. It was a great leap for the school. Then on the basis of the spectacular results in the SSC examinations of the subsequent years the ministry brought it under MPO program in 1993. Thus the school became a full fledged one.

The institution is a co-educational one. Both boys and girls sit in the same class. The teachers always keep their vigilant eye on their activities. As a result no untoward incidence of juvenile delinquency has occurred yet. Boys and girls live here like siblings. Strict discipline in maintained in all respects.

The prime aspect of an school the curricular program. A well-thought-out daily routine is chalked out every year to be followed strictly. The school has also an yearly routine where holidays and dates of different examination are given. The students are taught in the class in a manner so that the students don’t require the help of any house tutor or coaching center. After every lesson homework is given to keep the students busy with studies. The teachers take extra classes outside the realm of daily routine to meet the demand of the backward students. As a part of SBA (School Based Assessment) one comprehensive class test is given before every course examination (terminal exam) on every subject. The answer scripts of these examinations are sent to the guardians after proper evaluation. The results of each terminal examination are also sent to the guardians, so that they can take proper steps for the development of their children.

Before starting the class room activities the students gather together in the school field for “Daily assembly”. In the assembly the nation flag is hoisted with National anthem, The students take oath to devote themselves in studies, to maintain discipline of the school. The Headmaster addresses the assembly advising the students on different issues.

Each student is provided with a diary. The students note down the activities of each period and homework for the next day in the diary. The teachers can convey necessary messages to the guardians though this diary. The guardians can know about the activities of students in the class room from the diary.

The teachers regularly visit the homes of the students to exchange views with the guardians on the development of their children. On special cases the Headmaster himself goes for home visit to contact the guardians for taking appropriate measure for the development of students. Moreover the school holds a guardians get-together once a year for their productive suggestions for the overall development of the school.

The result of all public examination (primary, JSC and SSC) are note –worthy. The percentage of successful candidates in primary and JSC examination ranges from 95% to 98%. The percentage of successful students ranges from 80% to 90% in SSC examinations with a good number of GPA 5.

Apart from curricular activities the school lays emphasis on extra- curricular activities for the all round development of the students. Selected students are trained in cricket, football, handball. In all the events we have won trophies both in district and national level. The school has appointed a skilled teacher for painting. On many occasion the students of this school proved their worth in painting competitions in district and national level. Beside these the school has arrangements for music, debate and recitation. Our school publishes wall magazine every year and participates in competition in national level. The school also hold science fair annually. The Annual sports of the school is held with pomp and grandeur.

Though comparatively it is a new school, but the building it is housed in has an educational background of long post. This building was built in 1898 to set up a school called “Harding school”. In course of time the school was turned into Mymensingh Zilla school. It was there for a pretty long time until it was shifted to its newly built campus. Then the building was used as “Govt. Record Room”. At one stage the record room was shifted to another spacious building and this one was left abandoned.
